Adventuring can be a long and lonely profession, even in one of the world’s biggest MMORPGs,World of Warcraft. Some classes have the advantage of keeping animal companions, and anyone can have a cosmetic, non-combat pet, but why have a regular old pet when there’s a class that can summon actual demons?

One of the main reasons Warlocks remain a popular class is the impressive variety of demonic friends they can have. Demonologists have an advantage here, butWoWhas leveled the playing field in this regard, and all Warlocks have unique abilities and skills connected to their menu of demons.

Command Demonis an ability that warlocks can use to give their minions a temporary power boost by granting them a special temporary ability. This shows up in the taskbar automatically under the Command Demon button, depending on what demon the Warlock currently has. It only works with summoned demons, however, and can’t be used with Guardians.

Summoned Demons

This is the most common type of demon that pals around with the typical Warlock; these are the demons that are summoned and stay by the player’s side until they are either killed or dismissed.

The talent Command Demon is not the same asDemonic Empowerment. The latter is a skillthat only Demonologists have, and it enhances stats like Haste, health points, and spell or melee damage for any demon on which it is used.

How And When Obtained

When To Use

Imp

This is the first demon that Warlocks get at level 3.

Singe Magic:removes a detrimental magical effect from an ally.

The Imp helps absorb damage and can give the Warlock a boost to their DPS. It doesn’t tank, so use it only in party situations.

Voidwalker

Warlocks go on a quest in Exile’s Reach at level 10 to learn the Voidwalker summon spell.

Shadow Bulwark:grants an extra 30% health for 20 seconds.

The typical Warlock tank is often the choice for non-Demonologists for PvE action in the wild. It has the most health of any demon and drains life and energy from enemies.

Only Demonolgists learn to summon a Felguard at level 10.

Axe Toss:a ranged ability that also does AoE damage.

The onlybetter option for a tankthan a Voidwalker, the Felguard has many of the same skills, including lots of health and a taunt. Add a wicked cleave ability, and it’s brutal in close combat. Great for solo play and if the party needs more melee DPS.

All Warlocks get a Felhunter at level 23.

Spell Locksthe target, either muting them or halting their cast.

Great against magic users of any kind, so mostly a PvP pet, also has a bite that mixes physical and shadow damage.

Learned by the Warlock at level 19.

CastsLesser Invisibilityon the Sayaad for five minutes.

Does decent melee and shadow damage, but this is more about crowd control, which is why it’s almost exclusively used in PvE or for dungeon mechanics.

Demonic Tyrant

Summoned for the first time at level 42 by Demonologists only.

A passive skill that gives all the demons already summoned a 15% damage increase, a 15-second extension on their duration (if applicable).

A summoned demon but more for buffs as opposed to combat. The Demonologist summons as many demons as possible, which for this spec is a lot, and then uses the Tyrant to buff them, plus the creature does melee damage.

Although the Sayaad takes on two forms, the Incubus and the Succubus, there’s no difference between the demons' abilities. The form they take is entirely up to the Warlock’s preference.

Guardian Demons

These demons are summoned as part of temporary spells and often only last for 15 to 20 seconds, but there are special abilities that can make them last longer.

Dreadstalkers

This is the first spec-exclusive demon, learned only by Demonologists at level 14.

Summons two Dreadstalkers to do melee damage, but is more common in PvE than group situations. Demonologists should include this in their rotation after Corruption but before Hand of Gul’dan. It can only be cast in combat.

Hand of Gul’dan

Another ability exclusive to Demonologists, this spell is learned at level 10.

Summons several Wild Imps to the Warlock’s side. Use it after summoning Dreadstalkers to get a nice collection of demons going. Ideal for multiple targets with some organization or collecting them all together and pounding a single target.

Vilefiend

A beast that does nature damage and lasts for 15 seconds. Only available to Demonologists.

Add to the rotation after Hand of Gul’dan to collect as many demons to the Warlock’s side as possible. This is when it’s best to castDemonic Tyrant.

Infernals

An impressive monster that only obeys the whims of a level 42 Destruction Warlock.

Arrives from the Twisting Nether with a bang that stuns all the enemies in the area for three seconds, does 60 of the warlocks' spell power, and generates Soul Shards. Reserve this for boss fights with tricky CC mechanics.

Darkglares

Exclusively for Warlocksof the Affliction persuasionwho have reached level 42.

Other than increasing the length and damage of the Warlock’s DoT abilities, the Darkglare can also do shadow damage to a designated target. In a raid or dungeon is the best demon to use on a single, ranged target.
