The 16th-century murder-mystery narrative ofPentimentis already a masterful story in its own right. However, developerObsidian Entertainmentis renowned for enhancing its incredible narratives with additional story DLCs. The developer expanded on one of its finest works,Fallout: New Vegas, with the DLCs Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Lonesome Road, and Old World Blues, which offered compelling stories on-par with the base game. Now thatPentimenthas had time to settle into its niche, the potential is there for the game to receive its own story expansion through DLC.

Although there has not been any word yet from Obsidian as to the status of DLC forPentiment, that hasn’t the stopped speculation that it could receive DLC in the future. There are potential plot threads left hanging at the end of the game that could be followed up on in a future DLC. The nature ofPentiment’s story may seem like it is definitively over, but the way it spaces out its acts across three different time periods inthe village of Tassing’s historyopens the door for future stories set within the town.

Pentiment’s Ending Leaves Room for Future Tales Set in Tassing

With the ending of the game seeing the demise ofthe Thread-Puller, who orchestrated the events ofPentiment, the village seems to be in a position to move on from the trauma of the past 25 years. However, the final shot of the mural depicting the town’s history also hints at potential outcomes for the village’s surviving members. While these endings can vary depending on choices made in the game, a future DLC could give players a canon ending by expanding upon the future rebuilding of Tassing and the roles its villagers play in the process.

Despite the game’s plot being driven by the Thread-Puller, there are stillmany hidden secrets thatPentimentdoesn’t expand on, which could suggest an even more mysterious force has its hold over Tassing. During the events of Act 1, Andreas sees what he believes to be a spirit in the ruins of the Roman aqueducts located just outside the village. Later on, several nuns of Kiersau Abbey comment on smelling what they believe was the devil. While this is never outright confirmed, both instances are implied to be Sister Amalie; however, this ambiguity opens the door to potential supernatural explanations that could be further investigated in a story DLC.

Magdalene’s Departure to Prague Could Be the Start of a New Story

In theending ofPentiment’s third act, Magdalene sets off for the city of Prague to visit her friend, Esther. After corresponding with her via letters throughout act 3, it is no surprise that Magdalene would wish to visit Esther and leave behind the bad memories of Tassing. This adventure in Prague has the potential to be the start of its own mystery that could unfold in a DLC expansion. Given that players really only have one act to get to know Magdalene, focusing on her for the DLC would make the most sense.

Although Prague lacks the tight-knit community setting of a small village like Tassing, it could prove to be an even bigger source of intrigue as the heart of Bohemian culture in the 16th-century. There are still a lot of unexplored themes and loose plot threads that make DLC or even a sequel very likely, and the ambiguity of these elements means future stories could take one of many directions. Thestory of Andreas Malerseems to be over, but it doesn’t seem like Obsidian Entertainment is finished with the world ofPentimentquite yet.
