Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is one of the most anticipated games of 2023, and there are a ton of reasons why. Building on the incredible groundwork laid byMarvel’s Spider-ManandSpider-Man: Miles Morales,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is set to drop fans back in New York City, where some new threats await Peter Parker and Miles Morales. AlongsideKraven the Hunter, the fan-favorite villain Venom is set to make his long-awaited appearance inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, after being teased in both previous games' post-credits scenes. But while Venom is most often associated with Peter Parker, he could end up causing Miles some serious grief as well.

When general Marvel fans think about Venom, they likely most often think about his close ties with Peter Parker’s iteration of Spider-Man, whether it’s theTobey Maguire version inSpider-Man 3, the 90s cartoon, the underratedSpectacular Spider-Mananimated show, or the comics themselves. But while it’s certainly true that Venom has spent more time facing off against Peter than anyone else, Miles Morales' version of the Wall-Crawler hasn’t been free from the Symbiote’s terrifying tendrils.

Venom Could Pose an Extreme Threat to Both Peter and Miles

For two games now, Insomniac has been teasing the eventual appearance of Venom. In the firstMarvel’s Spider-Man, players discover over the course of the campaign that Harry Osborn has seemingly gone away on a “trip abroad.” In the post-credits scene, players discover that Harry has developed an extremely rare medical condition, and to save his life, Norman Osborn has put his son inside some sort of cryogenic vat, with some kind of black goo suspending his body. As Norman reaches a hand out to touch the glass, the black goo reaches out as well. InSpider-Man: Miles Morales' post-credits scene, Dr. Curt Connors warns Norman that his son might not be ready to leave the tank yet, but Norman insists, and Harry Osborn is woken up.

For Marvel fans, this black goo is instantly recognizable, it likely being a Symbiote. And with it being black, the natural assumption is that this Symbiote will turn Harry Osborn into Venom. While it’s usuallyEddie Brock in the Venom suit, the Venom Symbiote has attached itself to a vast array of Marvel characters over the years, including Harry Osborn during theUltimate Spider-Mananimated show. With even closer connections to Peter Parker and Mary Jane than Eddie Brock, a Harry Osborn Venom has the potential to really wreak some havoc on Spider-Man’s life.

But Venom doesn’t pose just a threat to one Spider-Man, but both of them. In theUltimate Spider-Mancomic series, during an arc titledVenom War, after a young Peter Parker dies and Miles Morales takes up the Spider-Man mantle, Venom makes an intense return. Believing that this new Spider-Man is Jefferson Davies, Miles' father, Venom attacks the Morales home and injures Jefferson. As Jefferson is rushed to hospital, Miles' Spider-Man and Venom have another face-off, and in an attempt to protect her son, Rio Morales dashes in to catch Venom off-guard. But as Rio rushes in, the police open fire on Venom, and she’s caught in the crossfire. Rio Morales dies in Miles' arms, and with her last breath, she tells Miles that he shouldn’t tell his father about his superhero alter-ego.

This traumatizing death hits Miles even harder than his uncle Aaron’s, and it causes him to hang up his costume for a whole year. This comic run proves that although Peter is often the victim of Venom’s rampages, Miles Morales and his own family certainly aren’t safe from the Symbiote inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. That being said, Insomniac Games isn’t afraid to switch things up from the comics, with Miles losing his father instead of his uncle in the first game, so really, anything can happen.
