Animals have played an increasingly important role inFire Emblemgames of late, with the series' latest entryFire Emblem Engageallowing players to adopt various creatures to keep in the Somniel after completing missions. InFire Emblem: Three Houses, animals could be fed around Garreg Mach Monastery for a variety of rewards as part of the game’s DLC.Fire Emblem Engagetakes this mechanic to a new level by allowing adopted animals to drop various items depending on their species, where dogs are by far the most useful of the available options.

While there are a whole host of availableSomniel tasksfor players to participate in during the downtime between chapters, managing animals at the Farmyard is one of the most lucrative activities for the least amount of effort. Adopted animals appear in the Stable, and up to five can be let out into the Farmyard to graze, dropping items for players to collect upon their next visit to the Somniel. With the ability to passively collect helpful items, it’s worth adopting animals while out on the battlefield, and the benefits that dogs bring in particular make them prime targets.

Dogs Provide Necessary Materials for Weapon Upgrades in Fire Emblem Engage

In order to adopt animals from the different regions ofFire Emblem Engage’s Elyos, players will need to invest in theDonation levels for various nations at the Bulletin Boardlocated in the Cafe Terrace. With the Donation level at a minimum of two for a given nation, players will have the ability to adopt three different types of dogs among other species while in that nation: Elyosian Dogs, Black Elyosian Dogs, and White Elyosian Dogs. While each breed has a different look, they all drop the same materials in the Farmyard, leaving it up to the player to choose their favorites.

What makes dogs so much better than other adoptable animals is the fact that they drop items necessary for upgrading weapons. All three breeds of dogs have a chance to drop either iron, steel, or silver ingots, which are a hot commodity when outfitting units with thebest weapons available inFire Emblem Engage. Players can talk to the Smithy in the Plaza to refine their weapons into stronger variants using these materials.

By comparison, other animals have the chance to drop items used for cooking in the Cafe Terrace. Cats can drop different types of fish depending on their breed, birds can drop nuts, sheep can drop milk, and so on. Using these ingredients can be beneficial for cooking meals that grant temporary stat buffs andincrease support levels if shared withFire Emblem Engage’s many units. However, the benefits that meals provide pale in comparison to the permanent weapon upgrades that the materials dropped from dogs can grant.

As the difficulty ramps up in thelater chapters ofFire Emblem Engage, having refined weapons becomes a more crucial aspect of preparing to battle. With some of the rarer materials like silver ingots in high demand, having a Farmyard full of dogs can be a great way to passively accumulate a rare item. While some players may prefer a mix of animals in their Somniel to take advantage of the benefits of cooking, dogs should be a staple no matter how many a player chooses.
