At the moment, the gaming industry is in the midst of a boom that seeks to bring older games kicking and screaming into the modern era. With a new take onResident Evil 4due out soon, as well as theDead Spaceremake coming in January, there is evidently a lot of demand, at least from the developer/publisher side, to do reimaginings of already beloved titles. However, sometimes it’s worth turning the clock back a few years, as thisResident Evil 5video shows.

As spotted by DSO Gaming, the YouTube channel Rustic Games BR has uploaded a video showing what the fifth installment in the long-running survival horror series would look like if it had been made in the mid to late 90s. The clip showsResident Evil 5as a classicREentry, complete with 32-bit PSX-style graphics, tank controls, fixed camera angles, and the old inventory system with those iconic sounds. While it absolutely screams nostalgia, it doesn’t appear to represent an actual fan demake that’s in the works and is more than likely just an experiment.

The channel is known for putting out video showcases of this ilk. For example, earlier this year, Rustic uploaded a video showing what ademake ofResident Evil 4could look like. Much like theRE5footage, this one imagines the celebrated fourth game as if it had been released on the original PlayStation console. For those who remember the “good old days” of survival horror, these videos are an interesting insight into going against the current remake trend and making a more modern release appear to be from a bygone era.

In fact, if videos aren’t enough, there have been a number of people who have gone ahead and created their own nostalgia-laden versions of games. Recently, someone did aGame Boy style demake ofElden Ring, and there was also the demake ofBloodborne, which takes the beloved gothic 2015 release and reimagines the opening sections of the game with pixelated PSX visuals.

WithResident Evil 9rumored to be in development,Capcom’s iconic franchise has been enjoying a resurgence since 2017’sRE7. WhileResident Evil 5is not considered the best installment in the series, particularly with it putting more emphasis on action and less on scares, it still has its following. Some may lament that the fifth and sixth games pretty much ditched the survival horror aspects, but at least fans can get a kick out of that scene in which Chris Redfield punches a boulder.

Resident Evil 5is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
