Garnering critical acclaim when it released in 2002,TimeSplitters2is regarded by many to be one of the best first-person shooters of all time, mixing arcade-focused shooting, aliens, and wacky time-traveling maps into a chaotic extravaganza. For years, players have been asking for the franchise’s return, with THQ Nordic finally announcing last year thata new entry in theTimeSplittersfranchiseis currently in development.
As reported by VGC, that next iteration of the series could potentially be a remake ofTimeSplitters 2, with THQ Nordic seemingly teasing itthroughSpellForce 3: Fallen God.The game includes a direct reference to a reimagining of the classic shooter, with one of the items inFallen Godreferring to the long-requested remake. Bear in mind there’s every chance this could just be an in-joke from the developers, especially considering aTimeSplitters 2remake has been requested for so long.

Regardless of whether this points to the future of theTimeSplittersfranchise or not, it seems the notorious series will have a place in the future of gaming despite being shelved for so many years. It was purchased by THQ Nordic in August 2018, with the company announcing their interest in rebooting the franchise one year later. Whatever the nextTimeSplittersproject turns out to be, it will have one of the franchise’s co-creators, Steve Ellis, on board.
Alongside the next game in the franchise, there’s also an ambitious fan remake of the series titledTimeSplitters: Rewindin the works, which will bundle together the first three games. The jury’s still out on when that game will debut, however, but it seems there’s a lot of promise behind the fan production. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see whether this newTimeSplitters 2Remake Easter egg develops into anything more down the line.
