It seems nobody knows how to keep a secret quite like Disney andStar Wars. Combine the two, and any potential leakers might as well attempt to break into Fort Knox. They’ve apparently gotten so into it that even their own actors are sometimes kept in the dark. Based on how they managed to keepThe Mandalorian’s most gossip-worthy cameosecret all the way up to the big reveal, it looks like that strategy is a winning one.
WhenThe Mandalorianended its second season with the surprise appearance by Luke Skywalker himself, the internet basically exploded into millions of voices suddenly squee-ing out in joy. Sure, some people predicted his presence (the show had been heavily teasing the arrival of a powerful Jedi), but nobody truly expected it. Funnily enough, that surprise extended to people who worked on the show itself, includingfellow Mandalorian Bo Katan herself, Katee Sackhoff.

While Sackhoff took part in a charity live stream ofStar Wars: Battlefront IIwith Star Wars Explained, the conversation eventually brought up the often-overlooked Jedi known as Plo Koon, seen often in theStar Wars: The Clone WarsTV series. For those unfamiliar, Plo Koon is the rather unique-looking alien with orange skin who always wears a mask (how forward-thinking of him). But with his mention, Sackhoff went off on a tangent about how she and many of the other stars inThe Mandalorianweren’t told Luke Skywalker would be appearing, instead being informed that Plo Koon would be the great and powerful Jedi to cameo at the end of season 2.
“That’s who we thought it was, was Plo Koon,” Sackhoff explained, continuing with a bit of self-deprecating humor saying, “and I’m a very gullible person, when somebody tells me something, I say ‘okay!'” This information honestly sounds par for the course withStar Wars. The series has always been quite adept at keeping secrets, even when information leaks out a little bit. At most, usually fans will catch wind ofa secretStar Warsproject with returning actors, but that’s about it.
One interesting bit of trivia that some might have forgotten is that Plo Koon canonically died inStar Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. When Emperor Palpatine activated Order 66, compelling the clone army to destroy the Jedi Order, Koon was shown being shot down in his starfighter. So a return like the one teased to Sackhoff and her fellow stars would have hit pretty heavily. Looking more deeply into Disney’s little bit of misdirection, maybe their choice of Koon as their fake-out could suggest they do, in fact, plan on bringing the character back at some point? His supposed “death” in the film was one of the few that could conceivably be survivable.
Of course, this is all wild speculation based on a single throwaway piece of information. There’s no reason to think Jedi Master Plo Koon will make a return. Still, though, it’s fun to think about, isn’t it? Maybe if he comes back, Disney will tell all the other actors that it’s actuallyfan-favorite Mace Winduthis time. Keep that train going.
