A teenager has been accused of shooting a sixty-year-old woman during a fight over aPlayStation 4. Unfortunately, it’s far from the first time avideo game console has been at the center of an altercation.
The PlayStation 4 was a juggernaut that outsold the competition throughout the eighth generation of video game consoles. Despite its successor, the PlayStation 5, being in its third year on the market, it hasn’t stopped the PS4 from getting some love, receiving ports of many AAA games as recently as 2023, and remaining quite valuable despite not being considered retro just yet. As such, console collectors definitely have the incentive to get their hands on one if they haven’t already, especially with thePS5 only being mostly backward compatiblewith its extensive game library.

Sony didbriefly put the PS4 back into production, which could make nabbing one a bit easier. Sadly, in Newark, Ohio, one such quest for a PlayStation 4 turned violent. While the events and motivations that led to the confrontation are still under investigation, a scuffle between two teenage boys led to one of them (identified as seventeen years old) firing his gun and hitting a sixty-year-old woman in the legs when she approached them. Apparently, he had arrived at the woman’s residence on North Morris Street to speak to the other teenage boy who was residing there, and the two were arguing over the PS4 console as well as a pair of shoes, although no context is available yet.
The shooter involved in thePS4incident has since been arrested for attempted murder, while the victim was taken to the Mount Carmel East hospital (and later the Wexner Medical Center) to treat her injuries, which she is expected to recover from with no complications. More adolescents were detained and questioned, while two vehicles reported to be on the scene were tracked down. A rifle and one of the suspects were found inside one of them, although the confirmed details of the event end there for now.
Physical fights or even assassinationsover highly in-demand and/or collectible products, including brand-new gaming consoles, are nothing new in the world of consumerism. Usually, the motivations behind those incidents are easy to figure out, but it remains unclear why this one took place. The Newark police have since opened the investigation to the public and are asking for anyone in the area with information to contact them via their number, (740) 670-7215, in hopes of gaining more context.
