Summary

The live-service superhero genre doesn’t have the best reputation right now, and it’s all thanks to games likeSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueandMarvel’s Avengers. Originally released back in 2020,Marvel’s Avengersfeatured a lackluster story, a severe lack of content, and an overrealiance on microtransactions, remaining a stark warning of the dangers of a half-baked live-service approach all the way up until its inevitable shutdown back in September of last year.

But despite the glaring warnings,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguethought it could do better. Released just a few months ago,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas fallen into many of the same traps asMarvel’s Avengers, delivering a disappointing story and a lack of engaging endgame activities, among a littany of other issues. ButSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueisn’t dead just yet, and there’s still time for it to avoid one ofMarvel’s Avengers' biggest mistakes.

Marvel’s Avengers' Captain Marvel Situation Explained

The baseMarvel’s Avengersroster features most of the characters fans have come to expect from the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes' usual line-up, including Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, and Thor. But accompanying these regulars was Kamala Khan, a character who adopts the Ms. Marvel moniker during the course of the game’s short narrative. Though she never makes an appearance,Carol Danvers/Captain Marvelis mentioned several times duringMarvel’s Avengers' main story, with Carol being the main inspiration behind Kamala’s chosen hero identity and appearing on a poster in Kamala’s room.

After all of these references in the base game, it seemed like a safe bet to assume that Captain Marvel would be one of the first heroes set to come toMarvel’s Avengersvia its post-launch content. This logical theory was seemingly given even more evidence a few months afterMarvel’s Avengers' launch, when well-known dataminer Miller Ross took to Twitter to leak a list of heroes allegedly coming to the game, with Captain Marvel being one of the names mentioned.

Rumors surrounding Captain Marvel’s inclusion as futureDLC forMarvel’s Avengersonly continued to become more prevalent as the years went on, with even some early-build dialogue of the character leaking online in January 2023. However, despite the clear desire from fans to see her in the game, Captain Marvel never found her way toMarvel’s Avengers, and with the game now completely shut-down, there’s no chance of her ever appearing.

Currently,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueis in real danger of repeating a very similar mistake. Before launch, Rocksteady confirmed that a new playable character would be coming toSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueevery season, with its first one being anElseworlds version of The Joker, who’s now slated for a March 28 release.Suicide Squad’s post-credits screen doubled down on this, showing silhouettes of another three playable villains. According to leaks, many of which come from Miller Ross once again, one of the upcoming DLC villains is set to be Deathstroke, a fan-favorite character who’s referenced quite a few times inSuicide Squad’s story and is clearly teased as the season 4 silhouette.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League announces Lawless as Season 3 playable character

But while The Joker is fully confirmed and ready to go, it’s a little unclear if any of the other DLC characters will follow him, withSuicide Squadalready in a bit of a rough position. While its exact sales numbers are console player-counts aren’t available right now, Warner Bros. has stated thatSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguefell short of expectations, and the game’s astoundingly low PC active player count (580 at the time of writing, according to Steam Charts) doesn’t paint a flattering picture. Though The Joker and his accompanying season could breathe new life intoSuicide Squad, it’s unfortunately much more likely that the game will soon be heading the way ofMarvel’s Avengers. Before it does, it should prioritize getting Deathstroke out to the masses, as otherwise it would end up repeatingAvengers' Captain Marvel mistake. With Slade Wilson being more popular than Nora Freeze and Lawless, prioritizing him before a potential shutdown happens would be ideal.
