A usual Malenia fight turned into an unusual disaster after a strangeElden Ringbug caused Malenia’s phantoms to continue to attack after the Blade of Miquella’s death. Despite its focus on difficulty, FromSoftware usually doesn’t try to kill the player after defeating an enemy. If anything, it gives plenty of rewards for beating them, and is imperative to the overall themes of the Soulslike genre, to keep pushing and eventually get rewarded for it. With Malenia being as difficult as she is, evencausing one high-levelElden Ringplayer to die over 300 timesto her, beating her should fit an equally big reward. Yet one group of players received something worse.

Malenia is well known for being the hardest boss in the entirety ofElden Ring, a challenge that many players see as something to take down, but possibly never will. She’s quick and hits hard, able to take down players in only a few slashes. One of her more difficult attacks is the Waterfowl Dance, a series of slashes that can kill a player instantly, though players have found good ways tododge the Waterfowl Dance. However, another attack of hers involves summoning phantoms to come in and attack the player, each with their own health bars.

This was the attack that bugged after the players had been successful in taking downElden Ring’s hardest boss. Posting to r/Eldenring, user Inzealous uploaded a clip of them in their nearly successful Malenia kill. The clip starts by showing them take Malenia down. As she is saying her last words, her phantoms come down, working after Malenia’s death, and proceed to kill everyone. Fortunately, this doesn’t happen until after the win is given, and the runes are provided, so this is thankfully not another case where anElden Ringboss steals a player’s runes after their death.

In the comments, many users made jokes at the expense of the players, mostly over the famous phrase by Malenia that she “has never known defeat.” Others have tried to figure out how this happened, with only guesses, like perhaps the move being coded to still work, even after she dies. While it’s unsure, it’s definitely a funny way forElden Ringto try and put down the player, even if unintentionally.

While it is certainly a scary bug, it is at least not as bad as thebug that causes Malenia to be unkillable. Bad things happen inElden Ring, though it could always be worse. It is fortunate they were given the win, but it does put into question what other phantoms or moves may persist after death, and how much care a player should practice even when the boss is dead.

Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
