At the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, Bethesda finally pulled the curtain back on its incredibly ambitious open world sci-fi RPGStarfield, showing off gameplay for the first time and confirming various features that fans have to look forward to come launch next year. There’s quite a bit of buzz surroundingStarfieldsince its reveal, with some fans excited for what the game has to offer and others worried that Bethesda won’t be able to deliver on all its promises. There are also plenty of questions aboutStarfieldsince the gameplay trailer dropped, though one of those questions has now been answered.

One of the features that Bethesda revealed at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase wasStarfield’s character creation tools. Like Bethesda’s other big open world RPGs,Starfieldplayers will be able to create their own character from scratch. However, Bethesda didn’t reveal if theStarfieldprotagonist would be voiced or not. Most of Bethesda’s games do not feature voiced protagonists, though the exception to that rule isFallout 4.

Bethesda has now confirmed thatStarfieldwill not have avoiced protagonist, and that all the conversations in the game will be first-person. This is in line with the majority of Bethesda’s games, includingSkyrim, and so it’s not a huge surprise. So far, the confirmation thatStarfieldwill not have a voiced protagonist has generated a mixed response online.

SomeStarfieldfansare praising the decision, as they prefer having an unvoiced protagonist. For some, this helps with immersion, as they aren’t hearing another person’s voice speak when choosing dialogue options. Others also like how a voiceless protagonist speeds up the game a bit, as they aren’t sitting there listening to excess dialogue. Critics of the decision feel as though a voiced protagonist should be standard and think that it makes the game feel lesser when compared to other big budget games.

The voiced protagonist debate is far from the only thing Bethesda fans are discussing after theStarfieldreveal. The reveal ended with Bethesda’s Todd Howard confirming thatStarfieldwill have thousands of planets for players to explore, and some are worried that will mean that most of the planets will be underwhelming. Others are excited aboutStarfield’s ambitious scope, though it remains to be seen if the game will live up to the high expectations set by Bethesda’s previous titles. Fans will just have to play it for themselves to be sure.

Starfieldwill launch in 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X.
