AlthoughStar Wars Rebelscharacter Sabine Wren has not made her live-action debut, a fan has breathed life into the Mandalorian warrior turned rebel alliance member. CosplayerNonbinateposted the image of themself in full costume as Sabine Wren, offering a glimpse at what the character might look like in real-life.
The Instagram post included a caption reading, “A return to an old love?? Yes!! 💜🧡 I haven’t worn Sabine in over a year for a variety of reasons, but boy, was it muscle memory getting back into this gear!! I missed it dearly and am delighted to return to it 🥺✨Show this gal some love?” Sabine Wren first appeared in the animated seriesStar WarsRebels, where she was voice by actress Tiya Sircar. Sabine is a Mandalorian warrior with a talent for graffiti who joined a rebel cell after deserting the imperial academy. She’s depicted as tough, idealistic, and passionate, with a knack for explosives, and was quick to become a fan favorite. Over the course of the series, Wren is reunited with members of her estranged Mandalorian family as the rebellion makes its way to her home planet.

Due to her heritage, many fans were quick to speculate that Sabine would show up inDisney Plus’The Mandalorian, which takes place several years after the rebellion finally defeated the evil Galactic Empire. Seeing asThe Mandalorianwas co-created byRebelscreator andStar Warsanimation legend Dave Filoni, this seemed like a reasonable assumption. Sabine was last seen at the end ofRebelsembarking on a mission with fallen Jedi Ahsoka Tano to find their friend Ezra Bridger, a fellow rebel and Jedi padawan who disappeared at the end of the animated series. SeeingBo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff), another Mandalorian character depicted inRebelsandStar Wars Clone Wars, make her live-action debut in the second season ofThe Mandalorianadded plausibility to the theory that actress Mercedes Varnado, who was seen in the trailer for the second season of the Disney Plus series, might be playing Sabine, but it turned out she was playing another Mandalorian warrior named Koska Reeves.
At one point inRebels,Sabine even became the temporary owner of the now legendary Darksaber, an ancient lightsaber wielded by the first Mandalorian to become a Jedi. After using the Darksaber to aid in the liberation of Mandalore, Sabine gifted the saber to Bo-Katan, who she believed could use it to unite the various clans. In Mandalorian culture, whoever wields the Darksaber is the true leader of Mandalore and one can only gain that title by winning the weapon in combat. The saber has had many owners throughout theStar Warscanon,including fallen Sith Lord Darth Maul, and more recently Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), the primary antagonist in season two ofThe Mandalorian. Gideon likely stole the Darksaber at some point from Bo-Katan during what’s known as ‘The Great Purge,’ when the empire destroyed most of Mandalore, causing a huge Mandalorian diaspora.
During the season two finale, Mandalorian ‘foundling’ turned bounty hunterDin Djarin took the Darksaber from Gideonafter defeating him in combat. According to Mandalorian tradition, Djarin is now the leader of Mandalore and even though he attempts to give it back to Bo-Katan, tradition states that it must be won in combat. Some fans were quick to point out the seemingly inconsistent rules here since Bo-Katan accepted the Darksaber when it was gifted to her by Sabine Wren inRebels.However, it’s unclear as to what the exact requirements for passing down the Darksaber are since Sabine never actually won it in combat but instead found it in Darth Maul’s hideout on Dathomir.
While no official casting news has been announced, it seems inevitable that we’ll see a live-action Sabine Wren in the future ofStar Wars. It’s possible she will likely appear in either the upcoming spin-off show that will followAhsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson)or possibly in future seasons ofThe Mandalorian.
