Summary
Star Warsactors Mark Hamill and Natalie Portman finally met each other at the Golden Globes. Surprisingly, the two have never met before, likely due to Portman starring in theStar Warsprequel movies ranging from 1999 to 2005, while Hamill starred in the original series from 1977 to 1983 and the sequel trilogy from 2015 to 2019.
Luke Skywalker and his classic quotesmake him one of the most beloved characters in theStar Warsuniverse, thanks partly to Hamill’s signature portrayal of the legendary Jedi. Natalie Portman’s character of Padme Amidala is similarly beloved, although the two were separated by real-world time andStar Warstime. As they finally met, a comedic undertone was felt between the two actors thanks to Padme being Luke’s mother in theStar Warsuniverse.

“Now I have finally met my ‘mother’, thanks to the @goldenglobes,” wrote Hamill in a caption for a picture showing the two smiling actors. Hamill is thirty years older than Portman, which is evident in the picture. While it’s surprising that the two never happened to meet, fans are likely excited to see the twoStar Warslegends finally get to exchange pleasantries. The unique context of this meeting was made possible by theStar Warsmovies' non-chronological releases.
One fan commented, “Seems to have gone better than your meeting with your father,” in a jokey reference to Luke’s duel with his father, Darth Vader. His mother was a much kinder woman, althoughPortman pushed for Padme to be involved in more action scenes, a request that was granted by George Lucas. This led to the character having a central role in iconic scenes like the droid factory skirmish and the Battle of Geonosis. But unfortunately forStar Warsfans, the two actors might not return to the classic universe.
Recently,Hamill explained he’s done playing Luke Skywalker. He detailed that this isn’t because he’s grown tired of the franchise, but because Luke’s story has been told and the universe has so much more to offer fans. This is a characteristically humble take from Hamill.
In December 2023, Portman explained that she had heard no word of her character returning toStar Wars, and seeing that Padme passed away at the end ofRevenge of the Sith, it seems unlikely that Portman would return to this character at an older age. Although that’s probably not the happiest of news forStar Warsfans, they still have plenty to look forward to shortly, like the recently revealedStar Wars Outlawsopen world.
TheStar Warssaga is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
