A Troubling Past
One important thing to note about Klaus, is that despite his profession as a spy and having earned the title of ‘greatest spy’, he didn’t always work alone. Duringepisode 2, “MISSION: FLOWER GARDEN II”, we learned a bit more about Klaus’s former team, Inferno. It was the team he was a part of, also tasked with the same Impossible Mission that Team Lamplight faced. Klaus had been a part of Inferno, which slowly he began to consider his precious family before the unfortunate end they suffered at the Impossible Mission.
However, Klaus had a master of his own during the training, Guido, who had offered him a mission to prove he was the greatest Spy before the mission. This mission had him separated from the rest of Team Inferno, which led to their demise and Guido’s supposed death as well. While it is proven later inepisode 3, “MISSION: FLOWER GARDEN III"that Guido betrayed his team and had intended for Klaus to be terminated on his own mission; Klaus himself survived the ordeal and earned his title that we see him with today. While it is helpful to understand the background information, the importance of understanding Klaus is to see how he generally is as a person when not on missions.

The Greatest Spy.
Klaus, having been introduced in an oddly humorous manner via being covered in red paint, may be the best spy but is most certainly an interesting and cautious personality. Despite his attempts at teaching Team Lamplight how to lock picks faster, his demonstration was skilled and instant but not clarified. Soon, he realizes that he is just recently appointed as a teacher and that he struggles withthe idea of teaching and the act itself. Nevertheless, after a chance encounter and conversation with Lily, he dedicates himself to teaching and personally mentoring the members of Team Lamplight so that they may all survive the Impossible Mission. This shows his utmost dedication to what he wanted to call a second family, although it has been shown he struggles with this notion himself.
Soon, through multiple episodes, Klaus begins to bond with his new classroom of students. From supporting them emotionally, in the case of Erna, to supporting their skills and teaching them new skills, in the case of Sybilla. Despite his teaching method effectively being a month-long challenge to force him to surrender, heprovides constructive criticism to his studentsfor every success and failure they commit. While Klaus’s background is mostly mysterious and up for interpretation, as far as the audience knows it adds a certain level of intrigue to his character. Even so, his skills are an important factor as well.
Ranging from long-term deduction and an incredible amount of foresight, Klaus alsohas immense physical prowessthat the only person we have ever seen been able to defeat him one-on-one was Guido, although that soon became disproved when Guido was injured. However, Klaus' immense attachment to his former family of Inferno shows in rare softer moments. Despite his profession and often stoic remarks, he holds a heart deep inside that is hesitant and almost unwilling to open up too much, lest he fails another family and loses them in the process.
Spy Familyhasn’t revealed too much about Klaus before he became a spy, although the fact it manages to portray Klaus in an intriguing way shows just how strongly developed his character is as a result. His stoic demeanor and lack of teaching awareness makes him somewhat humorous without meaning to, but Klaus holds conviction and heart when he dedicates himself to an objective. Not just as a spy, but asmany fans andSpy Classroomhas stated, but as Team Lamplight’s mentor, as well as slowly becoming a part of the second family he has found himself in. Where this will go from here remains to be seen.
