Summary
The developers behind the popularSniper Elitefranchise are back with a brand-new IP calledAtomfall,a first-person action RPG with a similar alternate historical setting. The game is currently set for a 2025 release window and will come to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, and is joining itsSniper Elitebrethren with a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.
WhereasSniper Elitepitted players against real-world enemies in historical action set pieces,Atomfallis taking a different approach to a slightly similar formula by adding RPG elements and multiple new combat options. The game seems to bechanneling a bit ofFalloutwith its post-apocalyptic settingas players can use guns, melee weapons, and even a bow and arrow to fight off soldiers and irradiated nuclear monsters in post-war England.
Developers Rebellion revealedAtomfallat the Xbox Games Showcase earlier today with a trailer showing off some fast-paced gameplay, characters, and its setting, Cold War-era Britain. According to the game’s description,Atomfalltakes on an alternate history storylinebased on a real-life nuclear incident in England that occurred in 1957, following the player character as they end up quarantined from the rest of the world years later.
Atomfall Takes an Old Formula in a New Direction
With just a brief 90-second trailer to go on, there is not much else to say about the actual plot ofAtomfallaside from the setup, which will see players fight to survive against myriad factions and nuclear enemies outside the quarantine zone. The game will seemingly have a focus on exploration and side content as well, though it is unclear what that may look like or if it will receive further expansions after launch as of right now.
Rebellion is best known for the first-person shooter franchiseSniper Elite, but it has some experience with apocalyptic titles as well withtheZombie Armygames, which took on a third-person tactical approach to gameplay.Atomfallseems to be the next logical step, combining elements from both into a full-on action RPG that will be the first of its kind from Rebellion Developments, as its previous games have all been mostly linear affairs.
The game is also seemingly taking inspiration from a variety of sources as well, with fans already making comparisons toFalloutand the game’s description mentioning classic British science fiction. Specifically, Xbox citesDay of the Triffidsandthe iconic science fiction seriesDoctor Whoas primary inspirations, which may be evident by the trailer’s use of a phone booth as a primary piece of iconography.
