Capcom took a big risk withResident Evil 7by shifting the franchise’s traditional third-person viewpoint to a first-person perspective. However, it’s safe to say the gamble has paid off big time, asResident Evil 7is one of Capcom’s best-selling games ever and earned rave reviews at the time of its release. Capcom will be continuingResident Evil 7’s legacy with the launch ofResident Evil 8later this year, but in the meantime, fans may soon get a reason to revisitRE7itself.

According to AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golemon Twitter, Capcom “100%” has a next-gen patch in the works forResident Evil 7. Presumably, this next-gen patch will be forboth PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, though that wasn’t specified. It’s also unclear what exactly this patch will entail or if this means that a proper next-gen release ofResident Evil 7is in the works. Maybe it will simply be a patch that improves the game’s performance on next-gen consoles, or maybe it will be a full-blown upgrade like some other games have enjoyed.

Whatever the case may be, if theResident Evil 7next-gen patch is in the works, one has to imagine that it will drop beforeResident Evil 8does. And if that’s the case, then Capcom should be sharing information about it sooner rather than later. After all, theResident Evil 8release date is May 7, and the company is also expecting to drop a second demo between now and then, and so it’s going to have its hands full.

AestheticGamer also touched on the possibility ofResident Evil 8supporting virtual reality. As some may recall,Resident Evil 7had a VR mode, and it was quite well-received at the time. WithResident Evil 8sticking withResident Evil 7’s first-person viewpoint and seemingly playing relatively the same, it makes sense that fans are wondering about a VR mode. AestheticGamer says thatVR was planned forResident Evil 8"at some point," but it may not be part of the final product. As it stands, Capcom has not made any official announcements aboutResident Evil 8having any kind of VR mode.

There are still many unanswered questions aboutResident Evil 8, though the recentResident Evilshowcase did give fans some answers. It not only confirmedResident Evil 8’s release date, but it also revealed that PS4 and Xbox One versions are on the way as well. And since Sony still hasn’t announced aPlayStation VR 2 headset, one would need the PS4 version ofRE8if they were to play the game in VR.

PS5 owners can play theResident Evil 8demowhile they wait for news on a potential VR version of the upcoming survival-horror game. Those on other platforms should have a demo of their own to play in the near future as well.

Resident Evil 7is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
