Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Waris doing some new things in all its modes, from a new scorestreak system in multiplayer to an exfil option in Zombies. One change, however, deals with a perk and has been noticed by multiple professionalCall of Dutyplayers, none of which are happy with whatBlack Ops Cold Waris doing.
One of the perks players will see being used often inevery mode of theBlack Ops Cold Warbetais Ninja, another name for the classicCall of Dutyperk Dead Silence. First introduced inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2over a decade ago, the classic perk originally allowed for players to be completely silent when sprinting. Like other modernCoDgames,Black Ops Cold War’s version of Ninja only offers quieter footsteps as opposed to silent ones.

ProfessionalCall of Dutyplayers took issue with this kind of change, voicing their frustrations on Twitter. One of these pro players, Austin Liddicoat from OpTic Gaming, made it clear what his problems with a nerfed Ninja are. He believes that “complete dead silence allows for more plays to be made in SND and higher game knowledge in respawn,” going on to say that “footstep volume is for scrubs.” Much like the controversialskill-based matchmaking inBlack Ops Cold War, more skilled players believe this is a crutch to give less-skilled players an advantage.
Team Summertime’s Davis Edwards shares this belief, saying that Ninja functions too much likeModern Warfare’s Dead Silence and makes the game too slow. He then goes on to say that the bestCoDgames featured complete Dead Silence, getting a reply from the two-time himself. Supposedly,Dr. Disrespect will have a big role in theCoDLeague, which could explain why he got involved in the discussion.
Dr. Disrespect believes that “Blops 1 sound design was the best,” and he offers ideas on how to improve the sound system in the series. The doc calls for “sound design indications for specific actions,” giving the example of how a “belt buckle would make a quick faint sound” when reaching the top of a ladder. Whether the developers at Treyarch give in to these requests for change is unclear, though they have already promised adjustments to thebroken snipers fromBlack Ops Cold War’s alpha.
Black Ops Cold War’s beta is only days away, and even with pro complaints that Ninja is not as strong as it was in older games, it will likely still be joining thebest weapons inBlack Ops Cold Warwithin many player loadouts.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warwill be available November 13th on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
