Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare nearly four months away from release, but The Pokemon Company has not revealed much about what the games entail. There have been only two trailers so far, and in terms of the new Gen 9 Pokemon, fans only know something about the three starters, three early Route Pokemon, and the two version-exclusive Legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, respectively. Most of the information available online about Generation 9 games currently comes from leakers, with the most trustworthy of them being Riddler Khu, who has a proven track record that goes way back. Still, it is worth remembering that this is all unofficial information and therefore should be taken with a grain of salt for now.
Riddler Khu recently shared thetype combinations forPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s starters, and they also confirmed that there will be a new concept that’s seemingly called “Regional Fakes.” As of now, very little is known about what sort of new Pokemon will make an appearance in Generation 9, and also which critters will come back from past games. However, Khu shared new information that might set expectations on the new pocket monster count inPokemon Scarlet and Violet.

With a new tweet, Khu stated that Regional Fakes are entirely new species of Pokemon that have their own Pokedex numbers, and that players should expect something similar to Generation 6 if Mega Evolutions were new forms rather than a gimmick.Pokemon XandYhad a very low amount of new Pokemon, with only 72 critters being part of the Pokedex, but the games did introduce 30Mega Evolutionsfor 28 different Pokemon, as both Charizard and Mewtwo got version-exclusive Megas. As such, the alleged new number of Pokemon inPokemon Scarlet and Violetcould be in the ballpark of 100-to-110 critters.
This is still higher than that ofPokemon SwordandShield, which featured 89 new Pokemon at release and a total of 96 in Gen 8 as a whole, which would mean thatPokemon Scarlet and Violethave the highest amount of new species since Generation 5. This information is particularly interesting because Khu also confirmed thatPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill have DLC, meaning that even more species might be added in the long run.
Recently, a leaker called PokemonLEAKS also shared details aboutPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s battle gimmick, which was later partly confirmed by Khu. As it seemingly doesn’t consist of mechanics tied to evolutions, which would justify the alleged number of new Pokemon in Generation 9, as Game Freak wouldn’t have to create more critters that are exclusively appearing during battles.
Pokemon Scarlet andVioletrelease for Nintendo Switch on July 25, 2025.
