Niantic, the famous developer behindPokemon GO, has just released a new game calledPeridot. This Augmented Reality (AR) game will leverageNiantic’s expertise from other titles such asPokemon GOto give a brand-new experience for players.
The mobile-focused developer has plenty of experience with AR games. The company was founded over a decade ago and successfully released two titles before its biggest hit in 2016,Pokemon GO, which took the world by storm by allowing players to catch Pokemon in the places they lived and train them. The success ofPokemon GOled the company to create games based on other franchises and third-party IPs, such asHarry Potter: Wizards Unite,Catan: World Explorers,Transformers: Heavy Metal, andPikmin Bloom. However, none of them were able to beatPokemon GOin popularity so far.

Peridotis an AR game that was just released by Niantic, and it’s currently available for Android and iOS. Described by the developers as a “one-of-a-kind magical experience in AR,” this is a title inspired bythe classic Tamagotchigamein which players will be able to take care of Dots, unique, magical creatures that they can play with, feed, teach tricks, and even take cute pictures of.
Peridotis the first original IP released by Niantic ever since its first game, and the company seems to betting heavily on its success. As soon asPeridotstarts, the gamer will receive one Dot, which will be a child. After they grow, they will start to get personality traits and may be able to breed with others when adults. Each one of them will have a unique DNA, being a completely unique creature. The game also comes with a breeding system called “Perigenetics,” which will allow keepers to create unique variations of each Dot, potentially creating infinite different digital pets.Peridotisa free-to-play game, and that’s where the monetization comes in. To breed and create more pets, players will need to purchase an item using real money, which seems somewhat limiting in case they are not willing to spend their resources to get more creatures.
The announcement comes on the heels of many controversies surrounding Niantic’s recent decision to change the rules about remote raiding forPokemon GO. Some rumors surfaced a few days ago stating that the company’s revenue was down after the changes. However,Niantic has recently denied its revenue is going down, explaining it was actually up when compared to the same period in 2022.
Peridotis already available for Mobile.
