APokemonfan with amazing artistic skills has recently designed a new regional variant for Oddish, giving the Plant-type creature new evolutions. Since their introduction inPokemon Sun and Moon, regional variants have been very popular inPokemonfan art, and this fan managed to make outstanding artwork using this concept.
Oddish and its evolutions Gloom and Vileplume first appeared in the first generation ofPokemongames. Oddish evolves into Gloom at Level 21, which can be turned into either Vileplume by being exposed to a Leaf Stone, or Belossom when using a Sun Stone instead. The final forms of this creature are often hailed as some ofthe best Grass-type Pokemonin the franchise and have become iconic monsters.
Now, aPokemonfan called Matratzfratz has decided to create a new Oddish variant and give it unique evolutions. This new variant does not have an official region where it’s from, but it differs from the usual Oddish for having “leaf miners” on its leaves. These creatures are insect larvae that affect the evolution of the creature, giving it an interesting twist. While the appearance of the regional Oddish is almost the same, as the Pokemon only has slightly different leaves, the differences become more substantial as it evolves to Gloom. Then, instead of flowers on its head, the creature has an insect that seems to be slowly devouring it. The final form is a Plant/Bug-type creature that looks like a butterfly holding the Oddish hostage, as the insect is now fully grown.

Matratzfratz’s artwork became popular in the community, obtaining over 2,400 upvotes. Commenters compared the new Oddish evolutions to Paras, one of themost memorable Grass-type Pokemon from Gen 1, as Paras was essentially an insect with a mushroom on its back.
This is not the first time that Matratzfratz has created curious regional variants for Pokemon. Last year, Matratzfratz designed aregional variant for Wiglett. In this new form, the white worm Pokemon lives inside an old log and evolves into Whacklett, an angry red worm with a huge club.
Another example of an interesting take on the concept is aregional variant of Laprasthat a fan created some time ago. In this new Dragon/Water-type form, Lapras becomes brown instead of blue, and it receives several scales and a tail much larger than its normal form. The community will continue creating new regional variants and, hopefully, some of them will be as good as these.
