WhenPhasmophobiadropped on Steam in September 2020, it very quickly became a horror phenomenon, especially among the streaming community who couldn’t get enough of its ghost hunting shenanigans and co-operative gameplay mechanics. Kinetic Games is often keen to make sure its lucrative title keeps ticking over nicely, withDecember’s Cursed Possessions updatebeing the last major patch. Outside that, the team is also doing smaller bug fixes and general tweaks to its property, including this latest tease which could be coming soon.
According to a recent report, which references a Reddit post,Phasmophobiamay be taking a look at one piece of key in-game equipment with a view to overhauling it slightly. The equipment in question is the sound sensor, which, as the name suggests, is used by players to detect whether a ghost is making a sound. At the moment, it exists as a simple white square with a light on it and is attached to a wall, but an image attached to the referenced post suggests that it may be having a completely different look.

In the image, it looks as though this sound detecting item will be changing into something that looks a more like something a Twitch streamer would use as a microphone. The new sound sensor looks like a regular mic on a small tripod stand, with what appears to be some sort of receiver connected up via red cables. It certainly looks a lot fancier than the current model, if this is indeed what it will be changing to. While the sensor does have practical purposes, it’s probablyone of the least used items inPhasmophobia, but is still an important piece of kit.
Despite releasing towards the latter parts of the year,Phasmophobiaquickly becameone of the best horror games of 2020, pulling in a ton of players who wanted a chance to take part in their own ghost hunting business or play a bit of paranormal detective. More than a year later, and it’s one of the highest rated games on Steam and still a popular choice for streamers.
It’s also become something of an inspiration for other games. Titles such asForewarnedseem to follow thePhasmophobiaformula, in which players must co-operate against spectral beings or demonic presences. But, ultimately, it’s Kinetic Games' release that will go down as something of a trendsetter for the genre, paving the way for a slew of fun, multiplayer horror titles.
