Summary
A Nintendo fan recently pointed out a surprising detail about the lid of theGameCubeconsole that not many owners have noticed. This sixth-generation console ultimately fell short in the race against the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox, but gamers still have fond memories of the GameCube thanks to its nostalgic line-up of exclusives that many wishNintendo would re-release on Switch Online. Indeed, the fabled “silver lunchbox” served as a launching point for now-beloved franchises likeAnimal Crossingand Pikmin, as well as introducing 2000s-era reinventions likeSuper Mario Sunshine,Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, andMetroid Prime.
Even 16 years and three console generations after the Nintendo GameCube was discontinued in favor of the Wii, fans who grew up with the system continue to pay tribute to it in different ways. Modders have builtminiature versions of the GameCubethat work almost as well as the original and designed custom paint jobs themed after modern Nintendo titles likeThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The GameCube itself and its collection of games are also sought after at yard sales and other secondhand outlets, with some players chancing across incredible deals that won’t be found on retail sites like eBay.

A gaming-centric YouTube channel named Spawn Wave recently posted a video showing off a hiddenNintendo GameCubedetail that likely passed some players by during the console’s heyday. As it turns out, the disk-like jewel on the top of the system can be removed by pressing on two small points on the bottom of the lid. Once the jewel is removed, it can be flipped over to reveal a pair of Nintendo and GameCube logos etched into its plastic - or even replaced outright with another, more customized disk.
For example, Spawn Wave references a project from another YouTuber for an LCD screen GameCube jewel, one that might bring to mind theplanned 3D GameCube screenthat was ultimately scrapped for unknown reasons. The GameCube was seen as an ambitious console for its time, and some of its features would later be utilized to better effect in more recent Nintendo systems like the Switch.
It isn’t clear why Nintendo decided to make the GameCube’s nameplate so easily removable, but it’s still an interesting detail surrounding the long-defunct console that left such an impression on players in the short time it was active. Even as Nintendo fans look forward to theSwitch’s eventual console successor, it seems like there are still plenty of fun secrets to be found in theGameCubeof old.
