NetherRealm recently announced a new story DLC coming toMortal Kombat 11through an impressiveannouncement trailerthat shows off the updates coming to the fighting game. However, it appears that while the trailer shows off a number of the brutal combos, finishers, and intros that theMortal Kombatseries has become famous for, it also has its fair share of Easter Eggs and in-universe references.
The new DLC forMortal Kombat 11, titledAftermath, is set torelease on May 26thand bring with it a number of new DLC characters, as well as a whole new story for players to fight through. Of course, with the many timelines and retcons from throughout the series, it’s also a treat when aMortal Kombattitle solidifies its own timeline and how it matches up with the established course of events.

One timeline defining moment that fans managed to catch is hidden within a battle introduction for Sheeva in the new trailer forMortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. In the trailer, Sheeva rips apart a familiar-looking head, parading and destroying a recent triumph before charging into another clash with her next challenger. The head that she rips apart belongs to none other thanMotaro, an old nemesis dating all the way back toMortal Kombat 3who has previously had a fairly negative relationship with Sheeva in the past.
For those unfamiliar with Motaro, he played the part as a mini-boss inMortal Kombat 3, however, his appearance as a decapitated and bisected skull confirms that he has not survived toMortal Kombat 11. So, while not every established bit of backstory from the series is set in stone as the timeline continues to shift,Aftermathseems to exist in a continuity where Motaro has been dispatched, likely at the hands of Sheeva herself.
This type of subtle storytelling is one of the more charming aspects of the otherwise brutalMortal Kombatseries, but the more straightforward plot coming withAftermathseems to be themost exciting aspect of the DLCfor fans of the series.
Altogether, the upcomingMortal Kombat 11: Aftermathlooks like an impressive addition to NetherRealm’s latest title in theMortal Kombatseries. From what the trailer has shown, as well asa number of screenshots, there is plenty to keep fans satisfied, from new characters and levels to free bonuses for anyone who already owns the base game. Combining everything new with the extended storyline certainly makesAftermathsomething to watch out for.
Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermathis set to release on May 26th, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
