Summary
Over the last decade or so, really since NetherRealm released the 2011 reboot, theMortal Kombatuniverse has only seen a handful of new, canon-oriented fighters.Mortal Kombat Xsaw the most fighters added to the series in quite some time, withall of the Kombat Kids, Erron Black, Kotal Kahn, D’Vorah, and Ferra/Tor all joining the fray for the first time.Mortal Kombat 11introduced another handful of fighters, most of whom act as antagonists for the game’s time-warping story mode. And while one or two of these newcomers are set to return inMortal Kombat 1, the story’s about to start all over again.
After defeating Kronika at the end ofMortal Kombat 11,Fire God Liu Kang uses the villain’s hourglass to rewind timeand create his very own universe. In doing so, Liu Kang revives his fallen comrades and foes and ends up giving them all tweaked backstories and origins in an attempt to keep this universe peaceful. But with the recently confirmed inclusion of Geras, the slate might not be quite as clean as fans first thought, and the way may be paved for Cetrion to make her own return inMortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1: Where Is Cetrion?
Introduced inMortal Kombat 11, Cetrion is an incredibly designed character that fans unanimously feel was done dirty by NetherRealm. An Elder God, Cetrion stands for virtue, life, and light over all other things. When her brother and Elder God opposite Shinnok dies at the hands of Raiden, Cetrion is told by her mother Kronika, the keeper of time, that the timeline needs to start again in order to rebalance the universe. Believing her, Cetrion joins forces with Kronika and acts as a secondary antagonist inMortal Kombat 11’s story.
Alongside Cetrion on Kronika’s team is Geras, the guardian of the hourglass. Much like Cetrion, Geras is bound by a black-and-white sense of duty that pits him against the Earthrealm warriors, even if he doesn’t necessarily believe that what they are doing is wrong. Atthe end ofMortal Kombat 11’s story, Geras is defeatedand thought dead. That is untilMortal Kombat 1’s latest trailer, where it’s revealed that not only is Geras still alive, but he now works for Fire God Liu Kang, with him now being the one in possession of the hourglass. With Geras making his return, many fans might be wondering why Cetrion hasn’t joined the roster alongside him.
At the end ofMortal Kombat 11, Cetrion comes to the realization that she’s been used byher mother Kronika, just as Shinnok had been before her. But even after realizing that her mother’s plan to reboot the universe once more would only lead to more chaos and death, the exact things she opposes, Cetrion still believes that her duty is to her mother, and sacrifices herself to give Kronika more power.
So, theoretically, Cetrion is dead in the current timeline, making her return seem fairly unlikely. But with Geras making a surprise return from the dead, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Cetrion to do the same. After all, this is Fire God Liu Kang’s new universe and if he wants Cetrion alive, she’ll be alive. It’s more than possible for Cetrion to crop back up inMortal Kombat 1, likely as some kind of servant to Liu Kang, in a similar vein to Geras' new role. With a mysterious new threat emerging, Liu Kang’s going to need all the help he can get, and a resurrected Elder God would make for a powerful ally.
Mortal Kombat 1releases on September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
