One of the most memorable games in theCall of Dutyfranchise isModern Warfare 2. For years since the newest generation of consoles were released, fans have been begging for a remaster of the iconic 2009, first-person shooter game released on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

It’s often held as one of the greatest in the franchise with it’s highly addicting multiplayer and immersive campaign mode. The campaign has thankfully finally been remastered but seems to have left out the highly anticipated multiplayer mode. Should it be added in the future? Here are 5 reasons why multiplayer should be added and 5 reasons why it shouldn’t.

10Why It Should: MW2 Is A Fan Favorite

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is one of the best in the franchise. It took everything great aboutCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfareand took it to the next level. The campaign mode took a more cinematic route and told a memorable story with moments that are still referenced to this day. The multiplayer built on the same formula from the older games but introduced new things such as choosing your killstreaks, pro perks, new game modes, and more. It’s been one of the most requested games for a remaster for the past decade.

9Why It Shouldn’t: It Wasn’t Super Balanced

One downside ofModern Warfare 2multiplayer is that it wasn’t necessarily super balanced. Things such as One Man Amy Noobtubes where players could just abuse the perk system to have an infinite supply of grenade launchers was extremely annoying to deal with. The killstreaks were very powerful as well and in the hand of a newer player, they could still be deadly. The killstreaks didn’t require much skill to use. There was something special about the balance in this game that made it special but certain overpowered and abused things can’t be ignored.

8Why It Should: It Was Somewhat Balanced

Modern Warfare 2compared to some of the recently releasedCall of Dutygames did have somewhat of decent balancing between guns and perks besides a couple of things that were abused. Most of the guns in the game were viable.

There were obviously some that were used far more than others but it was very possible to achieve a 25 kill streak with only a pistol or even knifing. Certain perk combinations were just a ton of fun to use and it added so much replay value knowing that specific playstyles weren’t punished.

7Why It Shouldn’t: It’d Take Focus Off Call of Duty 2020

The next game in theCall of Dutyfranchise is yet to be announced but is heavily rumored to be taking place in theBlack Opsuniverse. Marketing and teasing for the next game will usually start in late May to June andModern Warfare 2could definitely distract players from the brand new entry. Considering that the next game won’t have anything to do with theModern Warfare trilogy, it would be a bit odd to release the multiplayer this year. Either way, it can be used as a fallback if there are any developmental issues with theCall of Duty(2020).

6Why It Should: Modern Warfare 2 Maps Were Amazing

The maps inModern Warfare 2were phenomenal. They were fun to explore, and even more enjoyable to play on. The maps didn’t follow a very specific structure such as three lanes and really felt like actual battlefields. Some of them were a bit campy and better for snipers, but some were great for run and gunning. They had an identity and that’s what made them special and memorable. Maps such as Terminal and Rust keep getting remade for a reason. Players love the maps inModern Warfare 2and it’d be great to play them in their full glory.

5Why It Shouldn’t: Microtransactions

This could be a good or bad thing depending on how it’s handled. IfModern Warfare 2 Remasteredmultiplayer is released, it’s inevitable for it to get microtransactions added in at some point to generate revenue. If it’s handled in a way that forces players to buy things, it would be a really big problem.

It does seem that for now hopefully,Call of Dutyis done with the loot box system in its core games. A system that allows players to earn currency in-game to buy gun camos and other cosmetics with the option of spending money would be fine. However, it’d be great for microtransactions to stay away from the classic multiplayer experience.

4Why It Should: More Players Playing Call of Duty

If the multiplayer was released,Call of Dutycould take over the gaming world.Warzoneis already extremely popular and has a huge player base that continues to grow. WithModern Warfare 2 Remasteredmultiplayer, there could be an even bigger player base as those who may not like the newer game could return to relive memories in an older one. It would unite the community in a way that would have something for everyone without the veteran players feeling left behind.

3Why It Shouldn’t: Split Community

IfModern Warfare 2 Remasteredmultiplayer was released, it’d cause a lot of players to leaveWarzoneandModern Warfare (2019)to play it. This could lower the player count significantly in multiplayer modes. However, splitting the community isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Other games such as Halo have done this with their newest title that still has a big player base while their classic experiences remain popular and separate. It’s a situation that can be seen as bad or good but other games have pulled it off and it wouldn’t be hard forCall of Dutyto do the same.

2Why It Should: Overpowered Killstreaks

This may sound like a reason why it shouldn’t be released but the overpowered killstreaks in the multiplayer were one of the best parts of the game. They were extremely easy to use and super satisfying to get. It was a huge step up from the original set killstreaks in the olderCall of Dutygames and allowed for so much more fun. The Tactical Nuke was the best killstreak in the game. If a player achieved 25 kills with either a gun or with their other killstreaks, they’d be able to call in a game-ending nuke that took out every player on the map.

As of 2020,Call of Dutyisn’t necessarily in a bad state. While there are some people that really don’t like the slower and more realistic gameplay style ofModern Warfare (2019), both the multiplayer andWarzoneare doing very well right now. If it were to get released, it’s possible that it wouldn’t get the attention it deserves with fixing bugs, exploits, and more.Modern Warfare 2 Remastereddeserves the best, it’s a fan favorite and we’d like to see it treated with care. It’s the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now. Perhaps ifModern Warfare (2019)gets a sequel, it can be packaged with it.
