Dimple’s death is an unfortunate and heartbreaking conclusion to the Divine Tree arc, and perhaps even an unfair one.

Upper-Class xD

Dimple’s introduction to theMob Psycho 100series came in the very first season, as he was the first “major” threat in the series. He founded a cult known as(LOL) – derived from (笑), which is analogous to internet phrases in other languages that denote laughter like “lol”; or the French “mdr”. The cult was based on laughter and managed to amass dozens of followers in a short space of time. The cult forces members to don smiley-face masks that are actually cursed with a hex that invokes laughter in the wearer. Dimple was unable to convert Mob and ended up engaging in battle against him in a bout that unleashed the series' first display of the incredible power Mob possesses when he enters his 100% rage mode.

After being seemingly exorcised by Shigeo, Dimple managed to retain his form and began hanging around Mob, talking about wanting to become a god and teaming up to shoot to the top. Dimple’s desire to be worshiped, exalted and attended to would very soon become his undoing. Upon introduction, Dimple is considereda powerful upper-class evil spiritand had access to various abilities displayed in his first fight with Mob. During the events of the most recent arc; however, Dimple attained powers capable of killing even Mob, making him temporarily one of the most powerful entities in the history of the series. Before being beefed up by the Divine Tree, Dimple was powerful but no match for the various opponents Mob has had to face.

Friendship

After his defeat, Dimple aligns himself with Mob, and even attempts to be of assistance to him in subsequent arcs and story progressions. Dimple became something akin to a mascot or a sketchy friend. While he was aligned to Mob, his desire to become a god never changed. Despite this, Dimple was very helpful in some of Mob’s biggest fights, and played the supporting role very well, which made his eventual defection in the third season ofMob Psycho 100tragic while still believable. Dimple wasone of Mob’s dearest friendsand one of the things that made Mob trust him so much was his honesty. Dimple was honest enough to keep Mob in the loop regarding his dreams and ambitions, and was even unconscious of how much he wanted Mob involved in those plans. Mob was beyond satisfied with what Dimple brought to the table as he was, and was never too interested in what Dimple could be, and towards the end, all Mob really wanted to do was to talk to his friend face-to-face.

Dimple seemed to have suffered immensely from the pressure experienced by people who are particularly enamoured with being seen, celebrated and remembered, and having fought as hard as he did to get to where he was upon his debut, Dimple got too greedy and lost sight of how much he’d actually achieved; how much he’d grown. In one respect, Mob was Dimple’s polar opposite, as he never wanted to be famous or had any lofty dreams for the future; he was content with trying to live his simple life to the best of his ability. That level of contentment with the mundane is something Dimple once believed Mob could have only becausehe possessed unfathomable powerthe likes of which have never been seen before. He thought that Mob’s pursuit of a simple life came from his residence in the realm of the extraordinary, but after their argument in the Divine Tree, Dimple comes to remember that this simple innocence and unquestioning faith that Mob has shown on a regular basis are the reasons why they became friends in the first place.

Tragedy

What is especially tragic about the outcome ofthe Divine Tree arcis the fact that it appeared to be a major breakthrough for both Mob and Dimple with regard to their friendship; only for it to be short-lived. All actions have consequences, and while it seemed that Dimple would be able to simply take it all back and put everything back the way it was, it didn’t turn out that way and Dimple’s realizations were simply too little, too late. How this loss will affect Mob is going to be very interesting going forward, especially as the story breaks into a new chapter, and it is also indicative of the Mob Psycho 100 narrative being unafraid to do away with characters, even if they are in some ways central to the story’s developments. Dimple’s character progression went beyond a simplebad-guy-gone-good; and also beyond such a character going back to his old ways – it was also the depiction of a character biting off more than he can chew; aiming for greater things than he could handle. Ultimately, Dimple burned because he flew too close to the sun.
