It’s no secret thatGenshin Impactis raking in a ton of money for miHoYo, as its gacha system proves to be incredibly valuable to the company. While many weren’t certain where all this money was going, it was recently revealed that the miHoYo gave a big thank you to its employees for a successful year. Each year, miHoYo holds an annual employee meeting, but this time the attendees were all given expensive and lavish gifts, includingsought after PS5 consoles, Nintendo Switches, and more.
MiHoYo is the developer responsible forGenshin Impact, the open world anime game that took the world by storm in September of 2020. In just the few short months that the game has been around, it’s been met with critical praise and a ton of new content, including new characters and the region of Dragonspine. The backbone ofGenshin Impactis its gacha model, where players can pay money for a chance to get powerful characters or weapons.

In December of 2020, it was reported thatGenshin Impactmade nearly $400 million dollars in just two months on Mobile alone, and that number has likely only increased. Though it’s entirely possible to playGenshin Impactwithout spending a dime, many players are tempted by the allure of great rewards and incredible characters to purchase extra wishes with real money. On top of this, there is also a subset of the community that spends large amounts of money on the game, sometimes for YouTube videos, other times for personal enjoyment.
What makes this story somewhat funny is that miHoYo had limited stock, meaning it had to implement a sort of gacha system for its employee giveaway as well. As the image above shows, there was a wide assortment of PS5s, Nintendo Switches, Apple products, and RTX GPU’s, but employees didn’t receive all of these gifts. Daniel Ahmad shows a chart with percentages that likely relates to the chance that a person will get a specific gift. This is veryreminiscent ofGenshin Impact’s own gacha systemthat it implements through its wishes.
Ahmad clarifies that this isn’t a standard method of compensation for the company, reassuring fans that its employees are all paid fairly and equally. This was a one time gift for the success of the last year based on one ofGenshin Impact’s most hotly debated features. Regardless of how players feel about the gacha system, it’s good to see that at least some of the money players spend is going back to the employees that make the game.
Genshin Impactis avaialble now on PC and PS4, and later on Switch.
