Nintendo has an enormous catalog ofMario-themed spinoffs, and of them, theMario Partyfranchise has been a staple. The core gameplay has gone through a lot of different iterations over the years, including one that swapped out the iconic game board for linear tracks, but the recently releasedMario Party Superstarsgoes back to the spirit ofMario Party. However, this doesn’t mean thatMario Party Superstarscomes with everything the fans want. OneMario Party Superstarsmod adds the tiny and dangerous Bowser Jr. to the game as a playable character.
Bowser Jr. is also known simply as Jr.or Junior, and he is Bowser’s young son and the prince of the Koopas. This miniature monster is well-known for his mischievous personality, aptitude for mechanics, and habit of using the Junior Clown Car and Magic Paintbrush.

Although Bowser Jr. has appeared as aplayable character in pastMario Partygames,Mario Party Superstarsreduced him to a minor NPC. At least one fan of the character wasn’t content to leave him that way, so they created a mod to make Bowser Jr. playable inMario Party Superstars. YouTuber Sgt. Spike shared a short video showcasing Bowser Jr. running around the game board, competing in minigames, and interacting with other characters.
The mod is a full-replacement mod that allowsBowser Jr. to take the place ofMario, Daisy, or Birdo. Reportedly, Sgt. Spike is planning to give players a wider array of options to replace with Bowser Jr. in the future. In the meantime, the mod features the game’s Bowser Jr. model, a mixture of new animations and animations imported fromSuper Mario Party, Bowser Jr. voice clips, custom icons, and three new Bowser Jr. stickers. In the example video, the resulting character implementation looks almost professional.
As of writing, there are a few known bugs that affect the Bowser Jr. mod. Sgt. Spike notes in the mod description that not all the animations have been replaced just yet, which mainly affects a few specific minigames. Apparently, some of those animations aren’t exactly pretty, though the creator intends to replace them in future updates. Bowser Jr. also holds some objects incorrectly and his icon doesn’t fit in the character portraits featured in the character select screens and post-minigame results screen very well. Finally, whenBowser Jr. receives an item, the camera inexplicably focuses on his feet instead of his face. However, all of these glitches appear to be minor visual issues and shouldn’t impact gameplay too much.
Mario Party Superstarsis available now for Nintendo Switch.
