Last of Us Multiplayer Game May Not Be Dead After All

The Last of Usmultiplayer game may still be in the works. The originalLast of Usgame launched with the popular Factions multiplayer mode, and so many fans were hoping to see a continuation inThe Last of Us 2. Unfortunately for multiplayer-minded games, Naughty Dog decided to shipThe Last of Us 2as a strictly single-player experience, with no multiplayer mode whatsoever.

WhileThe Last of Us 2was released as a single-player game, that didn’t mean that Naughty Dog was abandoning the idea of a multiplayer experience set in the franchise’s universe. At Summer Game Fest 2022,Naughty Dog provided a big update onThe Last of Usmultiplayer game, revealing concept art and confirming that it was going to release as a standalone experience as opposed to as a multiplayer update forLast of Us 2.

Following recent layoffs at Naughty Dog, reports surfaced that the developer had potentially canceled itsLast of Usmultiplayer game. No official statements have been released debunking those rumors until now.As spotted by Push Square, game director ofThe Last of Usmultiplayer project, Vinit Agarwal, recently took to Twitter to celebrate his completion ofSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. His tweet included a short statement at the end, “And so this tweet can live on in peace… yes, I’m still working on that game.”

Agarwal’s tweet certainly suggests thatThe Last of Usmultiplayer gamehasn’t been canceled yet. This should give franchise fans some hope, though it ultimately remains to be seen what shape the project will take. Previous reports have suggested that Sony was slowing down development on the game, and that fellow PlayStation studio Bungie had a negative evaluation of the title. Whatever the case may be, hopefullyLast of Usfans get some clarification sooner rather than later.

The jury is still out on whetherThe Last of Usmultiplayer game will ever see the light of day, but there should still be plenty for franchise fans to look forward to in the future. It’s inevitable thatThe Last of Us 3is in development, plus there are more seasons ofThe Last of UsHBO series on the way.
