Domain Expansions are considered to be the most powerful technique in any sorcerer’s repertoire and are even referred to as the apex of Jujutsu sorcery.Jujutsu Kaisenhas shown many different versions of this powerful technique, mostly belonging to the most powerful characters in the series. Despite this, Gojo’s Unlimited Void is a step above even other Domain Expansions and is the strongest one next to Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine.
However, during their fearsome battle at the start ofJujutsu Kaisen’sShinjuku Showdown arc, Sukuna didn’t succumb tothe effects of Unlimited Void, despite Gojo opening the Domain a total of 5 times throughout the fight. Owing to his centuries of experience and overall knowledge of the workings of Cursed Energy, let’s take a look at how Sukuna wasn’t left immobile after Gojo opened his Domain in their fight!
Story Arc
Fearsome Womb Arc
Gojo’s Domain Expansion is special, even among other Domains. This is because it is essentially an outward manifestation of his Limitless Cursed Technique, especially of the concept of Infinity, which is tied intowho Gojo is as a character. By overlapping the middle finger over the index finger, usually on his right hand, Gojo opens Unlimited Void, whose sure-hit effect makes his target completely immobile.
This is the inner world of Limitless. It’s ironic, isn’t it? When granted everything, you can’t do anything…
This is because as soon as the Domain is opened, an infinite amount of information is given to the victim at such a rapid succession that the sheer act of taking in all of this information places an incredible load on the brain so that the person is left completely immobile. That, when taken with Gojo’s Cursed Energy and the fact that his overall strength is far greater than pretty much everyone else, lets him easily overpower his target’s Cursed Energy, effectively allowing him to do whatever he wants to his opponents.
How Did Sukuna Survive Unlimited Void?
The main reason behind Sukuna’s terrifying and legendary status is not just his strength, but rather his knowledge and mastery over Jujutsu sorcery. Due to this, Sukuna knew the exact counter-measures he needed to take to tank the effects of Unlimited Void, which he did in a number of ways. The first was the opening ofhis own Domain Expansion; Malevolent Shrine.
Despite Unlimited Void being more powerful than just about every other Domain in the series, Malevolent Shrine is the only one that is on the same level as it. So, when the two strongest sorcerers went head-to-head in a Domain Clash, the equal powers of each of their Domains more or less canceled the other out. Moreover, due to the nature of Unlimited Void’s sure-hit effect, Sukuna placed Binding Vows on himself and his domain.
The first of these was to designate the sure-hit effect of Malevolent Shrine on everything around him but himself, which is what allowed him to keep Unlimited Void’s sure-hit from directly damaging him.Furthermore, this Binding Vowalso made the slashes of Malevolent Shrine even more powerful so they would be made more effective in keeping the sure-hit at bay, which proved to be a very successful ploy by Sukuna as he did not take much of the damage from it.
Finally, through these Binding Vows, Sukuna was somehow able to use Megumi’s Ten Shadows technique, which he did by placing Mahoraga’s adaptation ability on Megumi’s soul instead of his own, ensuring that Megumi would be dealing with the effects of Unlimited Void instead of himself. This was a genius play by the King of Curses, since because of it, not only was he safe from Unlimited Void, but he was also adapting to it without needing to summon Mahoraga, which he already could not do during the Domain Clash with Gojo anyway.
Finally, Sukuna alsomanaged to use Domain Amplificationin this fight as a way to temporarily counter Unlimited Void. Domain Amplification is essentially a technique that summons a more condensed version of a users' Domain to coat themselves in it. This acts as a substantial countermeasure to many techniques, as seen when Sukuna used it to bypass Infinity during his fight with Gojo.
By getting through Infinity using Domain Amplification, not only was Sukuna able to hit and damage Gojo, but he also made use of it by touching Gojo during one of the latter’s Domain Expansions. Since the sure-hit of Unlimited Void affects everyone but Gojo himself, Gojo’s immunity is passed to anyone he is directly touching, as seen in the Fearsome Womb arc when he used Unlimited Void against Jogo while holding Yuji. This same principle applies here, as Sukuna locked his arms with Gojo and protected himself against Unlimited Void.
