Over the last week and a half, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has united the world in solidarity as everyone hopes for a peaceful resolution.Huge companies have begun suspending business with Russia, including the likes of EA, Intel, Apple, AMD, and more recently, Nvidia. The world of game development is also standing by the people of Ukraine, and among them is legendary developer John Romero, who’s newDoommap has been doing some good.

In a recent post on Twitter, the ex-id Software designer, and co-founder, has said thatOne Humanity, a new map forDoom 2, has so far raised over €25K, or more than $27K, for the Ukrainian relief efforts. Romero added that all proceeds from the sale of the level have gone to the Red Cross as well as the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. He thanked everyone who has so far participated and helped raise thousands. At the time of writing, the map is still available on the website for anyone who wishes to purchase it.

Romero released the newDoom 2leveljust a few days ago, so to see that so much has been raised in such a short amount of time shows the charitable side of the gaming community. For anyone who is still interested in playingOne Humanity, it can be downloaded from the developer’s own website for €5 or around $5.45. Again, just to make it clear, 100% of the money paid for the map will go towards helping the people of Ukraine.

Theconflict between Russia and Ukrainehas been affecting millions of people, and is currently a cause for concern for many across the globe. It’s also had an effect on the gaming industry as well, with some studios and developers being situated in Russia or Ukraine, or in Eastern and Central parts of Europe, such as CD Projekt Red which resides in Poland. CDPR has also joined the ranks of other companies that have severed business ties with Russia since the invasion.

As for the long-haired developer himself,John Romero is something of a gaming mastermind, or at least he was back in the heyday ofDoom,Wolfenstein 3D, andQuake. The fact that he’s created this new map and is dedicating every penny to helping Ukraine out shows a degree of humanity on his part. It raises questions of whether other famous people in the industry will be taking similar steps as well.
