Up until now,Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity’s marketing has focused on the characters that were introduced inThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The latest trailer for theHyrule Warriorssequel/Breath of the Wildprequelcontinues this trend, but in the process it offers one of the first substantial teases of the game’s new story elements.
While Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have been focusing on playable characters like Link, Zelda, Impa, and the Champions, recent trailers for the game have been starting to focus on other members of the cast, showing whatpopular side-characters like Robbie and Purah will look like inAge of Calamity. With the newest trailer, Nintendo has turned the spotlight on the Yiga Clan, the Sheikah splinter group that aligned with Calamity Ganon.

The short video shows brief clips of the Yiga’s masked soldiers confronting Link, but focuses mainly on the Clan’s leader, Master Kohga, who, like inBreath of the Wild, rocks a large belly and over-the-top demeanor. Although theYiga Clandidn’t play much of a role inBreath of the Wild’s story outside of one key quest, this suggests that they may have a bigger one this time around.
But the real intriguing tease doesn’t show up until the end of the trailer. There, two Yiga footmen can be seen kneeling before a hooded figure with a strange spherical device floating in their hand. It’s unclear who this “ominous figure,” as Nintendo calls them, is, but there are a few intriguing hints. For starters, the crest of the Gerudo can be seen on the back of their cloak, while the final shot of the trailer, a closeup of their face, shows them wearing a headpiece with an eye that resembles the ones seen inBreath of the Wild’s Malice, the dark substance created by Ganon.
Taking these into consideration, the most likely implication is that this mystery character will be key to the eventual resurrection of Calamity Ganon that leads to the events ofBreath of the Wild100 years afterHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This is somethingBreath of the Wilddidn’t really touch upon, since its backstory was largely contained to Link’s flashbacks, so it makes sense that Nintendo and Koei Tecmo might be gearing up to show Hyrule’s past from a wider perspective and actually show how Ganon makes his return.
Naturally, any new addition toBreath of the Wild’s backstory also brings interesting implications for its upcoming sequel. Fans know that Ganondorf is going to make some appearance in that game, and with their potential connection to Ganon,Age of Calamity’s mystery villain may be the first real hint athowBreath of the Wild 2will handle Ganondorf.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamitywill launch on November 20 for Nintendo Switch.
