Horizon: Call of the Mountaingot its first gameplay trailer during Sony’s State of Play June live stream - the last of four PlayStation VR2 game trailers during the unofficialleadoff event of this year’s Summer Games Fest. The trailer offered a deep look at what to expect from the VR tie-in game to theHorizonfranchise and the PlayStation VR2 experience.

The protagonist of the game is Ryas, a former Shadow Carja warrior that was being held prisoner and has been tasked to investigate a machine threat to the Carja. Ryas was chosen for his climbing and archery skills, and completing this mission will grant him redemption in the ways of the Sundom. The PlayStation Blog post also stated that the story will feature new and familiar characters from theHorizonuniverse and teased a possible cameo or interaction with Aloy.

The gameplay featured climbing, swimming, andmachine combat with small machines like the Watcher, flying machines, and the renowned Thunderjaw. The trailer was captured on PlayStation 5 hardware and the visuals that Guerrilla Games is known for, come through beautifully even as the true VR experience could end up making this trailer look pale in comparison to when the device releases. The virtual representation of the user’s hands looks smoother and more deliberate than on VR1. There’s a sense of tension while drawing the bow and visual reverberation of the string after a shot. The detail of the Carja armor around the player character’s hands has a sense of texture that makes it look like the player can feel every wrinkle, metal adornment, and loose strap.

The trailer gives nothing away in terms ofwhen in theHorizonstory this adventure takes place. At first glance, the involvement of a captive Shadow Carja warrior places it within a few years in either direction of the main story. With the PlayStation Blog post mentioning Aloy making an appearance, that has to putCall of the Mountainsome time around her arrival in Carja territory and the Battle of Meridian at the end ofHorizon: Zero Dawn.

There will be a separate section of the game called River Rides that offers a different experience of cruising down the river and spectating the scenery and machines.Guerrilla’s trademark stunning visualsin partnership with Firesprite’s pedigree for VR experiences have setHorizon: Call of the Mountainup to be a foundational experience for PlayStation VR2 launch titles.

Horizon: Call of the Mountainis currently in development for PlayStation VR2.
