Summary
Some fans of theHalofranchise have recently begun to ask for the revival of the canceled game that would have presented the space marine-based shooter in the style of its popular MEGA Bloks toys.Haloand MEGA have a history dating back to 2009, and while there are around 50 building sets based on variousHalogames, the planned video game collaboration never made it to release.
Development of the planned Xbox 360 game, which never had an official name and had been under development under the code name “Haggar,” was canceled in 2013. It’s unclear just how long developers at the former n-Space, which was known for its work on games likeMarvel Ultimate Alliance 2and theSkylandersfranchise, had been working on it prior to cancelation, but it came back into the spotlight in early 2017 after a video game archivist dug upfootage of the cancelled MEGA BloksHalogame.

Discussion about the cancelled game has recently sprung up again on Reddit thanks to a post from user npc042, who said they would prefer to play the building block toy-themed version rather than the rumoredremaster ofHalo: Combat Evolvedfor PlayStation 5. That report, which came from Tom Warren of The Verge on June 6, states that Microsoft has started plans for a remaster of the first game in theHalofranchise and that it could be in development for PS5. The report also hints that more could be revealed at the Xbox Showcase on June 9.
Halo Fans Seem to Actually Want the MEGA Bloks Game
While the original post may have been a bit of a tounge-in-cheek insult against the direction theHalofranchise is heading, support for reviving development of the canceled game actually seems pretty strong, with a lot of commenters finding out about it for the first time and having positive things to say. Some pointed out the success of MEGA competitor LEGO’s efforts in creating toy-themed games based on other successful IPs, such asStar WarsandBatman. At Summer Game Fest on June 7,Sony revealedLEGO Horizon Adventures, placingHorizonseries protagonist Aloy in a new building block-themed adventure.
Even with excitment over the resurfacing of the cancelled game, a lot ofHalofans seem disenchanted with the franchise’s direction under Xbox Game Studios. WhileHalo Infinitehas enjoyed generally favorable user reviews since its launch in 2021, some fans seem to be worried that 343 Industries is being stifled by its publisher, with one noting an ad during Summer Game Fest used footage fromHalo Infinitethat had been around for years. Another voiced their opinion that Microsoft should be putting more emphasis on Master Chief as a company mascot, contrastingHaloagainst Nintendo’s reliance onMario gamesin establishing brand recognition.
