The universe ofHalois one that has proven ripe for adaptation outside the gaming world. Several books and comics have been written, expanding the universe beyond the adventures of Master Chief, and a newlive-actionHaloseriesis in the works for Showtime following Master Chief’s battles against the Covenant. Fans haven’t been shy about offering their takes on the universe, and a teaser for one fan’s new project shows how dangerous the universe may be for one soldier found stranded on Delta Halo.
Film student Gareth Reeve shared the teaser for hisHalofan film,Long Way Home, on his personal YouTube channel before it spread across social media. Reeve says in the description the film follows an ODST trooper after a botched drop leaves them stranded and alone on Delta Halo. The trooper will traverse Delta Halo to regroup with their squad, but Covenant forces may not be as far away as the trooper thinks. The fan film is currently set to release online in August 2021.

Aesthetically, Reeve’s vision remains largely faithful to theHalouniverse. The trooper’s gear is in-line with the ODST combat gearHalofans recognize from the games, down to the helmet and grey color scheme. Reeve’s is also working to give some life to the scale found on the Halo rings and the iconic skybox associated with the locales.
Fan projects often prove to be small, hidden gems within the community of most pop culture franchises, and this is especially true forHalo. Since the series began in 2001, there has been no shortage of fan-made projects reflecting players' love of the sci-fi shooter series. Many of these do an impressive job capturing the detail of the universe, with one fan-driven workshop creating a faithful rendition ofJorge’s grenadier helmetfromHalo: Reach.
It will be interesting to see whereLong Way Homeends up sitting in the pantheon ofHalofan projects once the finished product is released. At the top of the heap is arguablyRed vs. Blue, the machinima comedy series set in theHalouniverse responsible for the rise of Rooster Teeth and inspired the creation ofGrifballfor players to enjoy inHalo’smultiplayer. WhileLong Way Homeis unlikely to have that level of impact, it could prove another popular piece of fan content shared within theHalocommunity. As mentioned, Reeve clearly has an eye for detail in the project and seems driven to deliver an accurate representation of the perils found across the game’s universe.
