GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldis Spiders' upcoming sequel to the cult-classic BioWare-esque RPGGreedFalland has finally been given a release window of sorts. During 2024’s Nacon Connect showcase on February 29, Spiders gave a brief preview ofGreedFall 2and revealed that it would be entering Early Access this summer.
GreedFall 2isn’t the first single-player game in recent memory to launch in Early Access, asBaldur’s Gate 3also had a rather lengthy Early Access. Regardless, it managed to win 2023’s Game of the Year, so this could very well be a blessing in disguise forGreedFall 2as well. Those accustomed to how Early Access works know that it essentially involves a game developer including players in the development process, but there is still a lot of nuance in how Spiders has chosen to handle the Early Access development ofGreedFall 2.
GreedFall 2’s Early Access Explained
AsGreedFall 2: The Dying World’s Early Access period doesn’t begin until summer 2024, Spiders may reveal more about it as the launch approaches. That being said, the developer has already disclosed information concerning it, including what features will be available at the start ofGreedFall 2’s Early Access period and what will be introduced later:
As far as whatGreedFall 2’s initial Early Access period will include, Spiders has confirmed players will be allowed to create their own character, explore the regions of Teer Fradee, Thynia, and Uxantis (two of which are likely onGreedFall 2’s Old Continent), meet some of the sequel’s new companions, and complete a variety of main and side quests.GreedFall 2’s Early Access will also be cheaper than the full release, which provides some incentive for those who wish to be involved in the development of the game and simultaneously pay less for it.
GreedFall 2will only beavailable on Steam throughout Early Access, and it is currently unknown just how long the period will last.
GreedFall 2 Has Unfortunate News About Its Early Access Saves
Perhaps the most disheartening news aboutGreedFall 2’s Early Access period is that save files will not be compatible between updates, which presumably also means that Early Access saves will not transfer to the full game either. However,Baldur’s Gate 3followed a similar set of rules during its nearly three-year Early Access period and still walked away with2023’s Game of the Year award, so this unfortunate feature doesn’t necessarily write offGreedFall 2so soon. As patches are implemented throughoutGreedFall 2’s Early Access, it will likely be in players' best interest for their save files not to transfer anyway.
Spiders has clarified that the team is excited to learn what it’s like to involve players in the development process, as this is the first time it has ever done Early Access. At the very least,GreedFall 2is obviously a much more ambitious game than its predecessor, so as long as Spiders remains committed throughout, Early Access may pay off in the long run.
