Summary

Despite the fact that more than half of 2024 has already passed, there are still a lot of big releases slated for the remainder of the year. One of the more noteworthy titles set to come out in the next couple of months isGreedFall 2: The Dying World. Developed by French studio Spiders, this upcoming action RPG serves as a prequel to 2019’sGreedFall, despite the fact that it has a “2” in its name. Though the first installment in this duology was a major commercial success, it was met with somewhat mixed reviews across the board, in large part due to what many perceived as a lack of overall polish.GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldwill likely aim to address some of the criticisms of its predecessor, while simultaneously building upon the foundations of the original.

GreedFall 2is currently planned for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC at an unspecified date. Prior to its full launch on next-gen consoles, though, the game will be available in Steam Early Accesson June 20, 2025. During this pre-release period, PC gamers will be able to experience the opening chapters ofGreedFall 2, which will account for roughly 30% of the entire game. While it’s exciting that fans will finally be able to get their hands on this title so soon, Spiders and publisher Nacon should take note of a potential competitor toGreedFall 2that could steal some of the spotlight away from its launch.

When It Comes to RPGs, GreedFall 2 Doesn’t Have Stiff Competition in September

Barring any major delays, September is shaping up to be a pretty busy month for game releases so far.Highly-anticipated 2024 titleslikeS.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl,Astro Bot,Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, andThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdomare all currently slated to launch within this month. When it comes to RPGs likeGreedFall 2, however, there are very few of them scheduled for release in September. At the time of writing, the only major role-playing game that’s planned to come out in the month, outside of Spiders' upcoming title, is NCSoft and Amazon Games’Throne and Liberty. This game is an MMORPG, though, so it doesn’t exactly target the same audience asGreedFall 2does.

Looking towards October, though, there are some notable RPGs slated for release in the first two weeks of the month. First up isDiablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, an upcoming expansion for Blizzard’s popular dungeon-crawling RPG that’s set to release on October 8. Following this titleon October 11 isMetaphor: ReFantazio, the next original IP fromShin Megami TenseiandPersonadeveloper Atlus. Outside of these few releases, none of which are in the exact same genre as Spiders' upcoming game, there aren’t any major RPGs thatGreedfall 2: The Dying Worldwill have to directly compete against at the moment.

Avowed Releasing in September or October Could Overshadow GreedFall 2’s Launch

That being said, there is still one title thatGreedFall 2’s early access launch could come face-to-face with, and that’s Obsidian Entertainment’sAvowed. Despite the fact that it’s been shown off on various occasions this year, this upcoming fantasy action RPG still doesn’t have an exact release date, even though it’s supposed to launch sometime in 2024. Out of all the role-playing games scheduled to release in the coming months,Avowedis the one that’s perhaps most similar toGreedFall 2in terms of genre, so ifthe Obsidian Entertainment titledoes come out in late September or early October, then it could overshadow the early access launch of Spiders' new game.

Fortunately for Spiders and Nacon, though, there’s a solid chance that this doesn’t end up happening. Not too long ago,Obsidian accidentally leaked a potential release date forAvowed— August 03, 2025 — only to delete it shortly thereafter. If this date sticks, thenAvowedandGreedFall 2: The Dying Worldwill be given plenty of room to breathe, but until further confirmation proves otherwise, there’s still the looming possibility that the former of the two games ends up launching in September or October.
