Elderandhas released a trailer showcasing many of its gameplay elements, including a variety of Metroidvania-style traversal methods, weapon upgrading, boss fights, and several unique biomes throughout its large world. The trailer has also confirmed the indie game’s February 16 release date, so Metroidvania fans won’t have to wait much longer to dive into a fresh set of challenges.
Elderandis a promising title from indie studios Mantra and Sinergia Games which won both Best Game and Best Game Design in the Gamepolitan Awards, one of the biggest gaming events in Brazil. The game featuresLovecraftian influences, with characters ranging from floating cosmic horror creatures to cultists along with the occasional massive suit of armor.Elderandwears its retro inspirations on its sleeve, incorporating many familiar elements of past games likeCastlevaniawhile bringing several of its own twists to the table to stand out. The game’s vibrant, detailed pixel art is also well done, with clever parallax effects and detailed lighting.

In a new trailer,Elderandhas announced that the game will be launching on February 16, so gamers only have to wait a few weeks. The trailer highlights some ofElderand’s main features and some of its settings beginning with the player piercing themselves with a dagger as part of some sort of sacrificial cult, not unlikeCult of the Lamb’s opening sequence. Numerous enemies are depicted including small mosquito-like flying creatures, a gigantic club-wielding rodent, and a massive floating eyeball with arms. For the most part, creature design looks interesting and varied, covering a broad range of species.
As expected from the genre, the game features a sprawling map that is explored through unlockable traversal skills like a grappling hook and a super jump to enter previously out-of-reach locations, along with a variety of boss fights that put these abilities to the test.Elderandalso featuresDark Souls-style bonfiresas save and rest locations and a fast travel system with portals. Somewhat unique from other titles in the genre,Elderandallows players to deeply customize their characters in terms of appearance and stats, and the game features a weapon upgrading system where looted materials can be used to make favorite weapons more powerful.
There is currently a free demo available for gamers who wish to try out some ofElderand’scontent ahead of its release. Based on what’s been shown so far,Elderandis shaping up to be aMetroidvania hidden gem.
