Kratos finds a Read Rune in God of War Ragnarok

Worried about what she might do, Kratos and Atreus set out through the Mystic Gateway to check up on her.God of War Ragnarok’s thirteenth chapter kicks off when they arrive in Vanaheim.

The Search For Freya

Paddling down the stream to the north, Kratos must use the Draupnir Spear to create a way to climb out of the cave. He’ll pass aRead Runebefore reaching Freyr’s Camp, where he learns all the Vanir have vanished. Upon approaching the bowl of food by the campfire, the sounds of a creature will echo through the woods. Not before long, Hildisvini will appear and lead Kratos to the next area.

There’sa Gold Crack in a rock upahead that Kratos must destroy with the Draupnir Spear. Like during the last visit, Vanaheim remains full of vicious plants. To destroy the ones along the path, Kratos must usethe Leviathan Axe. After progressing through the upcoming hole in the tree, aFierce Stalkerappears.

Its charge attack is hard to predict, so Kratos should keep his guard up as much as possible. Most of its attacks can be blocked, but avoiding her ground-pound attack requires Kratos to move a decent distance away. The stalker summons Wisps during the battle that, if they are defeated, respawn shortly after. Once the beast has been killed, Atreus should fire arrows at the remaining Wisps.

After crossing the river, a hoard of Gulons attack. To defeat them, Kratos must vanquish the Nokkens, as the creatures' song makes the Gulons much stronger. The Gulons explode upon being defeated, so Kratos must dodge out of the way to avoid taking damage. If a Nokken manages to grab Kratos, his vision will become impaired, so it’s important to keep an eye out for where they’re lurking.

There’s a Gold Crack in the wall to the northwest. After destroying it, Kratos can climb up to find aLegendary Chestcontaining theLeviathan’s Roar, a heavy runic attack.

Pressing on passed the Gold Crack in the next dead end, Kratos will reach an area with multiple collectibles. To the right lies aRed Coffinbehind some brambles and to the west, in the tree above, rests one ofOdin’s Ravens. Upon burning the brambles away with the Blades of Chaos, two Tatzelwurms appear. There’s a Nokken empowering them, so the Kratos must destroy it first.

There’s aNornir Cheston the path leading east at the next intersection. There’s also a Wulver there, so it’s best to approach the area with caution. To open the chest, Kratos must throw the Leviathan Axe at the paddle to the west of the chest, then, at the paddle just in front of the doorway to the southwest, and finally, across from where the Wulver was feasting. Inside the chest lies anIdunn Apple.

Recover The Stolen Moon

Skoll and Hati can be found sleeping in the next area. To wake them from their slumber, Kratos must find and restore the stolen moon. There’s a plant in the next area exuding purple fumes that block the way forward. To counteract it, Kratos must throw the Leviathan Axe at the plant while Atreus fires a Sigil arrow at it.

After defeating the Einherjar in the next area and destroying the barricade up ahead, Kratos will find aRead Runeon the left wall. Before moving on passed the abandoned village, he will spot aRed Coffinat the end of the western path. When he reaches the Einherjar camp, he discovers it’s empty.

After exploring the area, the Einherjar return. There are a lot of enemies here, so using theBlades of Chaos' Light Attacks can help if Kratos gets surrounded. Once the battle ends, Kratos can kick the chain in the north-most section down to the moon. While approaching it, an Einherjar materializes and takes it.

Pursue The Einherjar Thief

While chasing the Einherjar, Kratos must usethe Draupnir Spearto create a way over the river. After lodging it in a nearby pillar, he can cross, but not before taking care of one ofOdin’s Ravensin the southeast tree. Moving on, the Draupnir Spear must be thrown at a Gold Crack under the waterfall so Kratos can climb up. Before reaching the top, however, it would be wise tosave the game.

Upon reaching the top of the waterfall, Kratos will be thrown into a battle with the fleeing Einherjar and aWyvern. Defeating the Einherjar is simple enough, but the Wyvern can pose a few problems. A handy way to damage this creature is to deflect its lightning attack back it. It will be vulnerable after each of its attacks, so Kratos must remain close if he wants to hit it.

Once the battle is over, Atreus will collect the moon and set out to return it to Skoll and Hati. Moving on passed the next Wind Spout, another group of Einherjar attacks. After proceeding down the next path, Kratos and Atreus will reconvene with the wolves where Atreus awakens them from their slumber by lodging his knife into the moon.

After another few enemy encounters, Kratos and Atreus reach the area before Freyr’s Camp. Upon crawling through a small hole in the base of a tree, they will be forced into a boss battle, so it would be wise tosave the gamebefore entering.

Defeating The Drekis

Though the sight of two Drekis may send chills down the player’s spine, Kratos won’t always have to face them together. The blue one will retreat to the water once the battle begins, permitting a little more breathing. Though its absence gives Kratos more room to move around, it will constantly hurl projectiles at him from the shore.

Kratos freezes a plant in God of War Ragnarok

It’s important not to get greedy while attacking the purple Dreki, as it doesn’t stay stunned for long. It can also spew poisonous acid from its mouth, so it’s best to maintain a safe distance in between attacks. After some time passes, the second will emerge from the water.

The blue Dreki is arguably the most dangerous one. It’s a lot faster than its companion and can deal out some much more punishing attacks. It can be hard to see, but when it leaps into the air, Kratos should prepare to dodge, or else it will latch onto him.

It will surround itself with electricity from time to time too, and the only way to avoid it is to dodge out of the way. Kratos should take advantage of when it lunges at him, as this move is the easiest to counteract.

Rescue Freyr From The Einherjar

There is a selection of deadly plants along the way back to Freyr’s Camp. Dealing with them is easy thanks to the Leviathan Axe, but spotting them can be tough. After following the quest marker forward for a bit, Kratos will arrive back at the camp where he reconvenes with Freya.

Before leaving with Freya, Kratos can venture north in the cave to break open a Gold Crack. Behind it lies aLegendary Chestcontaining aMuspelheim Seed Half. Moving on, Kratos and Freya must board the boat by the river to continue their journey northwest by passing under someYggdrasil’s Dew.

Kratos finds the moon in God of War Ragnarok

Kratos will have to fight a Wight and a few Wisps in the next area, but they go down easily thanks toFreya’s Runic Arrows. There are two Wulvers in the next room, and though they should pose a decent challenge, the large arena renders them easy to deal with. A Nokken appears once the Wulvers have been dealt with. So long as the player finds it before it attacks, it shouldn’t cause too much trouble.

Two Draugrs in the next area are under a Nokken’s influence. To kill the Nokken, Kratos mustset fire to the bramblesprotecting it on a nearby tree. Once the Draugrs are gone, Freya will lead Kratos to the shrine overlooking an Einherjar camp. Interacting with it will open the way forward.

Pushing on passed the next Einherjar hoard, Kratos will walk by a Wind Spout that, after lodging the Draupnir Spear inside, reveals aRed Coffin. Then, the plants need to be frozen to clear the purple fumes blocking the northern path. Once the axe had been lodged inside one, Freya must elongate the freezing effect by casting a Hex Bubble at it, permitting Kratos to remove the axe.

After defeating the next Einherjar group, Kratos will open the northern gate with the Blades of Chaos. There’s a powerful Wulver namedBlatonnin the next area, but like other Wulvers, it’s easy to handle. Though the health bar may seem intimidating, it’s best to stay on the attack at all times. Parrying the creature’s blue attack will deplete a significant chunk of its health, so the player should prioritize doing so above all else. When it starts lashing its claws, the player must constantly block using the shield, as this attack can go on for a while.

Upon returning to Freya’s home, Kratos can use the Draupnir Spear on the western pillar to reach a new area. The door blocking the way forward can be opened by lowering a nearby chain. After turning the altar in the next room, the way forward will open. Before moving on, the player shouldsave the gamein preparation for a tough fight.

Defeating Gulltopper

Heimdall appears in the next room after Kratos enters. Freya leaves shortly after, leaving Kratos to fend for himself. Thankfully, the Gulltopper Heimdall rides is unable to foresee the future as he can. The battle kicks off when the Gultopper begins jumping on the ground. This attack can be parried to leave it vulnerable.

Next, it will slash its claws at Kratos, but this move can be blocked. Immediately after, it will perform an AOE attack by surrounding itself with electricity. The best way to avoid getting hit by this is to dodge out of the way. The player must keep an eye out for the beast’s unblockable charge attack as it can deal some serious damage. It’s easy to avoid from a distance, but it’s even easier to get hit if Kratos is too close.

Defeating Heimdall

Once Gulltopper is down, Heimdall will enter the arena. Unlike his mount, he is much more difficult to predict. He’s untouchable during the beginning of the battle. That is until Kratos throws a Draupnir Spear at him and detonates it. This leaves him open, but Kratos is still unable to land any hits.

He catches on to what Kratos is trying to do quite quickly and begins deflecting the spears. Igniting them will still stagger him, but only if he is close enough to the blast radius. A great way to ensure he gets hit is for the player to throw a Draupnir Spear at Kratos' feet. Eventually, after warping around for a bit, Heimdall will approach, permitting Kratos to detonate the spear.

After staggering Heimdall three times, Kratos will land his first punch. During Heimdall’s Realm Shift, Kratos must block the oncoming attack when time slows down to leave Heimdall vulnerable. He eventually gains a bonus Life Bar, but it can be depleted by staggering him twice. He will also return to grabbing the Draupnir Spear if it’s thrown at him, so this can be a great way to bypass his Realm Shift move.

Heimdall begins his second phase after his first health bar is depleted. While the previous phase was relatively easy to deal with, this one can be troublesome. He’s much faster this time around, so it’s best to maintain a safe distance at all times. When he surrounds himself in lightning, Kratos can parry him before he unleashes the attack.

If he sprints in Kratos' direction, the player should prepare to dodge as the incoming blow can be quite lethal. His blockable move is tough to predict, so it’s best to dodge the first two swipes and block the third to guarantee an opening. He can also throw boulders at Kratos, but dodging is easy so long as he isn’t too close.

Escape From The Prison

Breaking through the north wall in the battle arena will lead Kratos back to Freya, who has just rescued her brother. Following the path forward, they will be forced into a battle against some Einherjar and an Einherjar Captain. They aren’t too challenging, but the player should make use of the grappling mechanic if they are struggling.

The next segment of the chapter requires Kratos to carry Freyr back to the camp. After a few quick time events, and a lengthy cutscene, Kratos will reach Freyr’s Camp and set off back to Sindri’s House. Brok’s shop can be used toupgrade Kratos' equipmentbefore leaving.

On the way back to the Mystic Gateway, Atreus will receive theScent of Survivalside quest after speaking with Helka. After Kratos returns to Sindri’s House, the next chapter will begin.
