InGhostwire: Tokyo’s The Spider’s Thread, players must descend, progress, and survive in up to 30 stages and over 120 challenges in a rogue-lite-style dungeon crawling game mode featuring new enemies, talismans, Spirit Skills, and photo mode updates. Each level is unique and contains different main and optional objectives, including new missions in freaky locations such as a haunted school. However, Spider’s Thread also enables players to discover more about the story, so it’s not just about battling through stages.

To unlock The Spider’s Thread, players must complete Chapters 1 and 2 ofGhostwire: Tokyo’s main story. This makes a lot of sense, as the game has a lot of core mechanics for players to learn, including paranormal attacks and defense, bow weaponry, and traversal abilities. Although there’s a handy controls list guide in the game mode’s menu, it’s useful to know most of the controls and how the game works fromcompleting the first two chapters, which are called Beginnings and Trouble.

Players can expect to spend around a few hours completing the first couple of chapters, with The Caves of Steel being the final part of chapter two.As soon as players complete chapter two, The Spider’s Thread unlocks in the game’s main menu, and players can begin playing it whenever they like.

In each level of Spider’s Thread, the main goal is to reach the next floor entrance depicted as a blue beacon of light, while completing any core and optional objectives. Players must tick off any core objectives to move on to the next floor and must try and progress through as many floors as possible without dying. However, players aren’t penalized for not completing any optional objectives, although these are often worth completing as some grant additional rewards.

After completing the first level of Spider’s Thread, players find themselves at The Cat’s Paw on the first floor, which acts as a base beginning level. The Cat’s Paw is also the location of the Cat boss and some additionalGhostwire: Tokyointeractive catfeatures, including the Prayer Bead Enthusiast, where players can upgrade their prayer beads to grant them additional perks or buffs to abilities.

There’s also the Catloger, which rewards players for completing various jobs during the game mode, with 89 tasks to complete. Players can then travel to the next floor to try to beat as many stages as possible.

Each time players complete a floor, a results screen appears indicating how much XP players earned and their total synergy level. The latter unlocks branches of the Spirit Skills tree, a different take onGhostwire: Tokyo’s skill tree from the main game. The stats also display how much Nekomata Koban players acquired, the currency needed to purchase non-spectral healing consumables, and obtain Spirit Skills to level up the player’s abilities on the skill tree mechanism.

If players die when trying to complete a floor, player progression is reset, and they are returned to The Cat’s Paw base level to begin again. However, it’s not too punishing like mostroguelite video games, asseveral things carry over if players die in addition to Spirit Skills learned, including prayer beads, Spirit Thread, shop unlocks, and catalog job completion.
