The upcoming cyberpunk-themed slasher platformerGhostrunnerwas announced to release on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 when it was revealed late last year. Now, with only one week before launch, developer One More Level announced thatGhostrunnerwill release on the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 as a free upgrade for players who own a current-gen version of the game.
InGhostrunner, players take up the role of a sword-wielding assassin who is tasked with killing The Keymaster, a villain who has taken over the world. The title’s gameplay looks to be inspired by games such as Mirrors Edge, with the player character traversing a neon-lit dystopic city by running along walls and leaping off of skyscrapers. One More Level first showed offGhostrunnerat Gamescom 2019, and gave fans an in-depth look at the game’s slasher platformer elements with a16-minute showcase at IGN’s Summer of Gaming in 2020.

While the developer recently confirmed thatGhostrunnerwould also release on Switch, news about the game launching for next-gen consoles did not surface until today, when One More Level announced that players who purchaseGhostrunneron Xbox One or PS4 will be able to play the game on the next-gen version of their console with a free update. But even though the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are dropping in November, the free update will not be available until sometime next year. The exact release date for the upgrade has not been revealed.
Ghostrunnerrecently had a private beta, which started in mid-September. Only a fraction of fans who applied via the officialGhostrunnerDiscord server were selected to participate in the event. Everyone who participated was required to sign non-disclosure agreements, which has prevented news aboutGhostrunner’s gameplay from surfacing.
Despite the released gameplay footage and beta,Ghostrunnerdid not have a confirmed release dateuntil last month’s PAX Online 2020. That is when One More Level announced that the game would release on October 27.
Ghostrunneris available to preorder on platforms including the Xbox One, PS4, and PC via the Epic Games Store, Steam, and GOG. Players who are excited to pick up that game might want to act fast, asGhostrunneris currently 20 percent off until October 26.
One More Level’s decision to provide a free update to launch the game on next-gen consoles seems to follow a similar trend as other game releasing at the end of 2020. This year’s other big Cyberpunk-themed title,Cyberpunk 2077, will also come with a free updateof the game’s next-gen version.
Ghostrunnerreleases on PS4, PC, Switch, and Xbox One 0n October 27.
