It’s now less than a month untilFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Intergradereleases for the PlayStation 5. Aside from allowing fans to replay the JRPG epic with new enhancements only possible on the system, its biggest draw is the new DLCEpisode Intermission, which puts players in control of ninja girl Yuffie Kisaragi, who was an optional party member in the originalFinal Fantasy 7.
The DLC covers an entirely new story arc of Yuffie infiltrating Midgar during the events ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, something that never happened in the original game. She won’t be adventuring solo, however, as she is joined by Sonon Kusakabe, a completely new character to theFinal Fantasy 7series. Unlike the main game, which lets players take control of any of the four main party members - Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith, - only Yuffie will be playable throughout the DLC episode. Sonon is strictly controlled by AI.

While this news may be somewhat disappointing to hear, a new update on the Japanese PlayStation Blog, which has been handily translated by Gematsu, reveals some new details about the DLC’s combat.Sonon may not be playable, but he can be given instructions by the player, and he and Yuffie are capable of performing special team-up moves referred to as synergized attacks.
As long as both Yuffie and Sonon have ATB available, pressing the L2 button will engage synergy between the two, thus allowing them to pull off these attacks. The blog provides two examples, but it’s heavily implied that there are more. The first example is Synergized Art of War, which deals a barrage of hits and allows subsequent attacks to deal more damage. The second is Synergized Windstorm, which can also launch enemies towards Yuffie, no doubt allowing her to deal follow-up combos.
Of course, Yuffie and Sonon have their ownLimit Breaksas well. Yuffie’s is an entirely new attack she didn’t possess in the originalFF7called Bloodbath, whereas Sonon’s is Dance of the Dragon. Both attacks deal a flurry of powerful blows against enemies with their respective weapons.
There is a whole lot more to look forward to inIntergrade, though what’s caught many fans' attention is the incorporation of elements from the spin-off gameDirge of Cerberus, which canonically takes place afterFF7. Two of that game’s main antagonists will make an appearance, but whereas Weiss appears to simply be an optional boss fight in the main game, Nero will actually appear as part ofEpisode Intermission’s story for Yuffie and Sonon to fight.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergradereleases for PlayStation 5 on June 10th.
