Ruby Weapon is a notoriously difficult boss inFFVIIand is considered by many to beone of the toughest enemiesin the game. This fight has undoubtedly resulted in countless broken controllers, rage quits, and inventive curse words over the past two decades. This is partly because Ruby boasts a defense stat that’s nearly double that of every other enemy in the game and he has a Whirlsand attack that systematically removes every party member until there’s only one remaining. At this point, however, the fight does not become the fair one-on-one that would be expected because Ruby grows three tentacles, each with a different stat-reducing attack. Defeating the tentacles might seem like the obvious solution, but it’s actually not because taking out the tentacles simply causes Ruby to go back to using Whirlsand.
It’s not clear how the fight will be tweaked or adjusted for the massive multiplayer environment ofFFXIV, nor is it certain whether the other three optional weapon bosses—Emerald, Sapphire, and Diamond—will eventually also make an appearance in the game. However, Yoshida’s description of the upcoming boss fights as “weapon themed” is already causing speculation and excitement. The fifth weapon, Ultima, can already be found inFinal Fantasy XIVas three different boss encounters, the last of of which is considered to be one of the most difficult in the game.
