Summary
The Nintendo Switch may be the only current platform never to receive a port of hit MMORPGFinal Fantasy 14by this point, but director Naoki Yoshida is still reportedly open to the idea of releasing the game on the console’s successor, the Switch 2. While there are no official plans for a Switch 2 port as of now, Yoshida has mentioned that he hopes to bringFinal Fantasy 14to as many platforms as possible, including Nintendo’s, if the opportunity arises.
Though it released to mediocre reviews and an outraged playerbase back in 2010,Final Fantasy 14grew into its role as one of the biggest MMOs of all time after Yoshida took over the project as director and revamped the entire game. Adding entirely new base game content and dubbing the new versionA Realm Rebornfollowed by multiple massive expansions, the game quickly became a top competitor in the MMO market, evenrivaling the likes ofWorld of Warcraft.

While plans for a Nintendo Switch port of the game had reportedly been discussed as far back as 2019, the idea never came to fruition and now, as the Switch nears the end of its life cycle, the door is open once again to port the game to the alleged Switch 2 console. According to Yoshida, who spoke about the possibility on the YouTube channel Easy Allies, reported on by Nintendo Everything,Final Fantasydeveloper Square Enix “would love to have our title available on the Nintendo platform.”
The Future of Final Fantasy 14
Of course, Yoshida’s comments are fairly optimistic, as the director also mentioned how long it took forFinal Fantasy 14to receive an official Xbox port, which only recently released earlier this year. Such a port was years in the making and took a lot of work for both Yoshida and Square Enix as a whole, given that the game’s servers had to be hugely expanded to include Xbox players in its shared cross-platform world.
For now, though, Nintendo has yet to confirm a release date for its next console, so it is difficult to say how long it might be until fans see more news about a potential port to the system. However, rumors place the upcoming console’s specificationssomewhere between the Xbox Series S and the PlayStation 5in terms of hardware, and consideringFinal Fantasy 14started life over a decade ago, it should be more than capable of running the game.
Yoshida and theFinal Fantasy 14teamhave been hard at work bringingthe game’s upcomingDawntrailexpansionto life, which adds entirely new regions to explore along with two new player jobs and several new game modes. In the meantime, the game is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and the Xbox Series X/S and even recently saw its free trial expanded, letting new players play the game entirely free all the way up to the game’s second expansion,Stormblood.
