Paramount Plusis going to be adding to its catalog of original films and television shows by adapting a popular movie from the 1980s for the small screen. Lizzy Caplan has been announced as the star of a streaming series that will take on the story ofFatal Attractionfor Paramount Plus.
The originalFatal Attractionstarred Glenn Close,futureAnt-Manactor Michael Douglas, and Anne Archer as the main characters caught up in an intense thriller after Douglas' Dan Gallagher has an affair with Close’s Alex Forrest. While Dan originally believes the tryst is something he can have while his wife is out of town, he soon learns that Alex has developed an unhealthy obsession that eventually leads her to threaten the safety of his family.

Varietyreports that the show coming toParamount Pluswill include those same story beats but in a television series format.Caplan will take on the roleof Alex in this reimagining ofFatal Attraction, though just who will play Dan is not yet known. Much like the movie did back in 1987, it’s said that the show is going to take a deep dive into themes of marriage as well as infidelity. Those themes are going to be looked at through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women. There will also be a new look at issues such as personality disorders and coercive control.
As in theFatal Attractionfilm, Caplan’s Alex will become obsessed with her lover after a brief fling with the married man. It’s not clear how that modern lens might affect the way this particular obsession plays out compared to the original film, but there are definitely tools that are available that weren’t back when Close was busy stalking her lover. Social media and the internet were two things that didn’t exist in the ’80s in the same way as today.
This isn’t the first time that Caplan has taken on a television adaptation of a female film character that has a rather violent streak. Just a few years ago she played Annie Wilkes in theHulu original seriesCastle Rock. The character of Wilkes was made famous by Kathy Bates when she starred alongside James Caan inMisery.
The part of Alex in thisParamount Plus adaptation of Fatal Attraction is quite a bit different from Caplan’s most recent work. Having starred in horror movies, suspense thrillers, and action pieces, the actress just lent her voice to aNetflix original animated seriescalledInside Job. The comedy series exists in a world where the conspiracy theories making their way around the internet these days are actually true and are run by a covert organization.
