Ubisoft recently gave players an extensive look at the upcomingFar Cry 6along with a release date and the platforms it will be shipping on.Far Cry 6is yet another cross-gen release from Ubisoft aside from last year’sWatch Dog LegionandAssassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Cross-gen releases are often a double-edged sword in the games industry, and recent cross-gen titles haven’t had the most pleasant launch, especially the last-gen variants of these titles. As such, there is a bit of skepticism aboutFar Cry 6as it prepares to ship on eight systems this fall.

The Pros

Far Cryis one ofUbisoft’s biggest franchisesand one of the most popular third-party franchises around, and it’s no surprise that the company wants to release it on as many platforms as possible.Far Cry 6isn’t the first entry in the series to have a cross-gen release, and it probably won’t be the last.Far Cry 4was a cross-gen game and performed well on the last-gen systems. Although not officially confirmed,Far Cry 6looks to be using the modified Duniya engine that poweredFar Cry 4.If that is the case then,Far Cry 6might not be as game-breaking as some of the recent cross-gen titles.

The ongoing pandemic continues to affect theproduction of next-gen consoles, and it will be a while before PS5 and Xbox Series X are readily available in the market. Most console players still rely on their old PS4 and Xbox One, andFar Cry 6would be a much-needed release on those systems this fall.

There have also been rumors about Ubisoft+ heading to Xbox Game Pass and if true, it’s possible that announcement will take place atXbox’s E3 2021 showcase. WhileFar Cry 6would sell incredibly well regardless of if it’s on Game Pass, such a move would still make it more accessible.

The Cons

It’s no surprise that cross-gen games aren’t representative of the full next-gen gaming experiences. Especially early on in the generation,  fans are itching to experience next-gen only titles on their shiny new systems. AlthoughFar Cry 6is shaping up to be a great-looking game, it isn’t necessarily a visual showcase.Far Cry 6’slimitations are easily noticeable in the latest trailer, like relatively low textures when compared to games built specifically for next-gen consoles. It may come as a disappointment to people who were expecting a pure next-genFar Cryexperience.

WhileFar Cry 6does introduce new gameplay features, it seems to be structurally similar toFar Cry 5and other recent Ubisoft titles. It could be since it’s developed on the same graphics engine though it isn’t a good sign simply becauseUbisoft’s open-world gamesare often criticized for borrowing elements from each other, which makes them very similar.Far Cry 6might not break that mold, given its last-gen limitations.

Cross-gen games are mostly bad news for last-gen users as these games tend to be less optimized on those systems.Cyberpunk 2077is still struggling on base PS4 and Xbox One. Ubisoft has indeed reached out and assured fans that they will showFar Cry 6running on last-gen systems soon and that the game won’t suffer the same fate as that ofCyberpunk 2077. However, it’s too early to assume that this won’t be the case come fall.

Ubisoft recently releasedWatch Dogs Legion, another cross-gen title from Ubisoft Toronto, now working onFar Cry 6.Watch Dogs Legionstruggles on base Xbox One and PS4, with both versions experiencing frequent screen tearing and frame rate issues. The Xbox One version of the game offers a 720-900p resolution, whereas the PS4 version lingers between 900-1080p. Moreover, the game’s next-gen counterparts were surprisingly locked at 30FPS, whichUbisoft plans to address in the latest patch.

While it is too early to predict howFar Cry 6will perform on each device, fans should wait for more info from Ubisoft in the coming weeks and months before making their mind.

Far Cry 6launches June 29, 2025, on Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
