Bloodbornewas released back in 2012, and though FromSoftware’s gorgeous Gothic fantasy is still beloved, it is beginning to show its age.Demon’s Soulsgot the remaster treatment, which makes a remake or remaster ofBloodbornehighly desirable. There has been no official news of aBloodborneremaster, but that doesn’t stop the rumors or alleged leaks from circulating.
French Retailer Leaks a Bloodborne PS5 Version
In September 2020, a French retailer called Fnac allegedly leaked the existence ofa remastered version ofBloodbornefor PS5. This had the rumor mill churning because this was the same retailer that had accidentally announced the release date of the PS5 before Sony officially did. This “leak” was on the heels of a summer filled with speculation as to what would come next from FromSoftware. Games writer Imran Khan notably tweeted in June of that year:
Time would reveal that those reasons would largely revolve aroundElden Ring, however. The game had been revealed at The Game Awards the previous December with a short, mysterious trailer announcing the alliance between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin. FromSoftware was subsequently tight-lipped aboutElden Ringand silent on anythingBloodborne-related.
A remake involves remaking the game from scratch, while a remaster improves upon various aspects of a game, such as the graphics.
Online Leakers Detail Bloodborne: Hunter’s Edition
In July of 2021, a leaker called SoulsHunt made somelofty claims about aBloodbornePS5 upgrade. SoulsHunt had previously been right on the money aboutStranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Originand was further backed by a 4Chan user called Demonite. Demonite’s involvement was significant since they had accurately predictedBloodbornebeforeBloodbornewas announced.
Because of these credentials and the extensive details about an allegedBloodborne: Hunter’s Edition, gamers were convinced that there must be a grain of truth to the rumors. Neither leaker provided any evidence to prove the existence of the remaster, but they claimed to have plenty of details.
Theentirely fictionalBloodborne: Hunter’s Editionwould have included new left- and right-handed weapons, quality-of-life updates, NPC lip-syncing, and expanded Cainhurst Castle and Cathedral Ward levels. Demonite not only promised this shiny new remaster but also a PC port to follow the PS5 upgrade. But again, as time would tell, these claims were false.
Colin Moriarty Makes Bloodborne 2 Claims
When Sony acquired Bluepoint Games, a studio that had made a reputation for itself remastering games likeShadow of the Colossus, whispers of what their next project may be began to circulate. These whispers were further stoked by Colin Moriarty of the Sacred Symbols podcast whoclaimed a re-release ofBloodborneon PS5 was in the works. Moriarty’s claims were ultimately unsubstantiated.
Fake Bloodborne Remastered Screenshots
In March 2022, a couple of crisp, promising screenshots from an alleged remasteredBloodbornemade the rounds. While they did depict a slightly updated version of the Hunter’s Dream, the images were not froma project by FromSoftware or Bluepoint Games.
Rather, they had beentaken from environment artist Simon Barlewho had built the Hunter’s Dream from scratch as practice. Someone else had, a little clumsily, slapped a watermark reading, “Bloodborne Remastered” in the lower right corner. The screenshots were quickly debunked, but still rekindled hope that one day there might be a Bloodborne remastered for the powerful PS5.
The Rumored Bloodborne PC Port
Bloodborneis, and remains, a PS4 exclusive. There have been many rumblings of a possible PC port over the years.Sekiro: Shadows Die Twiceand the whole of theDark SoulsTrilogy eventually became available to PC players, so logic followed thatBloodbornewould too. AfterHorizon Zero Dawnshook off the shackles of PlayStation exclusivity, the possibility of a PC port became even stronger.
In May 2023, eagle-eyed modder Lance McDonald noticeda strange screenshot on theBloodborneWiki. The image was uploaded by Marcos Domenech, who had worked at FromSoftware as an environment artist from 2013 to 2017. McDonald alleged that from the image, Domenech must have had a full retail version ofBloodbornerunning on Windows. This claim is unsubstantiated, but once again stirred up rumors of aBloodbornePC port.
FromSoftware Might Be Too Busy With Elden Ring
Elden Ringwas a successful new FromSoftware IP, earning many accolades, including 2022’s Game of the Year Award.Elden Ringis more expansive than any previous “Soulsborne” games and is only going to get bigger thanks to the highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. It is safe to say that FromSoftware has its collective hands full at the moment. That said, Bluepoint Games was entrusted with the remastering ofDemon’s Souls. Therefore, FromSoftware could hand over the reins to the proven professionals at Bluepoint.
According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, it isn’t that simple.Bloodborne’s code is apparently so complicated and “spaghetti” that only the folks who wrote it can unravel it. This means that if FromSoftware wanted to remaster or remakeBloodborne, which they very well could, they would have to be heavily involved in its development. As Grubb terms it, FromSoftware employees would have to “sherpa” anyone trying to remasterBloodborne.
All signs indicate that aBloodborneremaster, remake, or sequel would thrill fans and please PC gamers everywhere. Given what has happened with previous PS4 exclusives, it would make sense forBloodborneto follow suit. As time goes on, it seems only inevitable that there will one day be aBloodborneremaster but as it is now, there is no official confirmation.
