PlayStation Blog recently interviewed multiple game developers to ask who thebest FromSoftware bossis. Hidetaka Miyazaki was the first asked, and his favorite is Old Monk from the originalDemon’s Souls. The Old Monk is unique from almost any other boss in the games, and this is why Miyazaki is so proud of it. He says that there was a lot of pushback in terms of the design of Old Monk. It is something Miyazaki really wanted to do form a visual and gameplay perspective, but others did not believe it was possible. However, the team pulled it off, and Old Monk became one of the most memorable bosses from any FromSoftware game.

With Demon’s Souls, there were a lot of mechanics throughout the development that were difficult to design. For instance, the asynchronous online features were complicated, but I think the Old Monk encompasses those tribulations and how we pushed through and made something we were proud of.

TheOld Monk is a popular boss, but there are others that are memorable as well. Dancer of the Boreal Valley fromDark Souls 3is the favorite of BluePoint producer Randall Lowe. Owl fromSekiro: Shadows Die Twiceis Israel Rey’s favorite, another developer from BluePoint who worked on theDemon’s Soulsremake. Nameless King fromDark Souls 3is a treasured boss of many, including Bend Studio’s Tucker Cole. Ludwig the Holy Blade, Knight Artorias, Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower, and Guardian Ape were also mentioned by the developers as favorites, among others. It’s intriguing to see how the FromSoftware games have influenced others in the industry.

Elden Ringhas high expectations to live up to. The game has been in development for a long time, especially considering the delays, but now there are just three weeks to go until it debuts. Soon, players will be able to find out if this new world has fresh “favorites” to add to their FromSoftware boss lists.
