Summary

The launch ofDestiny 2’s highly anticipated Final Shape expansion is just around the corner, with a lot riding on it as the culmination of the game’s overarching narrative and what could be its last DLC expansion. The Final Shape is bringing a host of new features toDestiny 2, including a new story, the newPrismatic subclass, the new Pale Heart location, and much more. As per usual with aDestiny 2expansion, The Final Shape will also see a new raid added to the game, just three days after the DLC is released. Despite the excitement and anticipation already surrounding the upcoming raid, it will need to ensure it overcomes one obstacle thatDestiny 2’s most recent original raid, unfortunately, fell prey to.

Destiny 2’s Root of Nightmares raid could be considered its most divisive raid to date, largely on account of its difficulty. In what was likely an effort to make the raid more accessible for casual players, Bungie toned down the challenge in Root of Nightmares, which ultimately resulted in one of the biggest controversies in the history ofDestiny 2. As the MMO now moves into its Final Shape expansion with the new raid immediately following, it should examine what the Root of Nightmares raid did wrong and make doubly sure its raid is different.

Destiny 2’s Final Shape Raid Needs to Put Up a Bigger Fight Than Root of Nightmares

Destiny 2’s Root of Nightmares Raid Is Far Too Easy

Released on July 26, 2025,Destiny 2’s Root of Nightmares raidwas supposed to be the pinnacle of the Lightfall experience. This is due in part to the anticipation built for the Lightfall expansion but also because it was the first raid since Leviathan to feature the Cabal as the main enemy. Unfortunately, while Root of Nightmares was a joy for many casual players who either don’t have a dedicated fireteam to play with or simply have yet to experience what it’s like to emerge victorious in a raid, many hardcore veterans found the raid’s simplicity and ease to be unfulfilling.

As far asDestiny 2raids go, Root of Nightmares is the easiest. Not only doesRoot of Nightmares have the highest completion rateof anyDestiny 2raid to date, but it has even been completed by a solo player in one sitting with absolutely zero deaths. This is not to mention the fact that the day-one race to complete the raid only took the fastest team just under two and a half hours. This has all led to Root of Nightmares being mockingly referred to as the “Crota’s End ofDestiny 2.” Interestingly enough, the reprised version of Crota’s End inDestiny 2is now considered by many to be its most difficult raid.

Destiny 2’s Final Shape Raid Needs to Prevent History From Repeating Itself

IfDestiny 2’s Final Shape raidwants to avoid the controversy that came with Lightfall’s Root of Nightmares raid, it needs to ensure it puts up a much more challenging fight. This means a much longer completion time, a less significant completion rate, and the puzzles and challenges necessary to accomplish those feats. Especially with the raid coming out only three days after the launch of the expansion,Destiny 2can afford to let this one be as long and drawn out as possible, even just to extend the appeal and lifespan of The Final Shape. Hopefully, it will already be challenging enough as it is, launching so soon after the DLC drops, but only time will tell.
