Despite centuries of expeditions and descents into the dungeon, none have been able to truly comprehend how this complex labyrinth operates. The Guild has mapped out much of the dungeon’s explored floors and their corresponding workings withthe help of several familia, yet the Colosseum is one area where not even the strongest of adventurers dare to set foot.

The latest episode ofDanMachicenters itself around this colossal building, andwhile Bell and Ryumight have made it out alive, the same cannot be said for the countless others that succumbed to the Colosseum’s ruthlessness. Little is known about the bizarre workings of this arena, with the massive structure being dubbed as a ‘dungeon within the dungeon,’ primarily due to its own sentient nature. However, the latest episode has certainly shed light on the matter, even giving way to a few speculations on its existence and purpose.

The Colosseum: An Overview

Locateddeep within the 37th floor, the colosseum is a massive arena that is almost suspended within a wide room, with narrow bridges on all four sides linking it to the rest of the floor. Beneath the colossal structure is a 50-meter deep pit, and those unfortunate enough to plunge into its depths are sure to meet their demise. To cross the structure from one side to the other, adventurers must traverse through the monster-stricken arena, with no other possible exitway.

The workings of the Colosseum are mostly unknown, thoughthe Guild has mapped outsome of its intricacies based on the accounts of adventurers that were fortunate enough to leave the floor unscathed. Different species of monsters constantly spawn within the Colosseum, with all of them massacring one another endlessly. As soon as one monster dies, another respawns instantly to take its place, replenishing the number of monsters.

There is a limit to how many monsters can exist within the arena simultaneously, as the Colosseum stops spawning monsters once that set number has been achieved. However, the never-ending scrimmage between the monsters forces the arena to constantly spawn monsters. Seasoned adventurers are known to avoid this malignant structure, witheven the Loki Familiarestraining from ever setting foot in this wretched part of the dungeon. For now, the purpose of the Colosseum’s existence remains unknown, similar to many aspects of the dungeon, though a few speculations can be made that make sense of this sprawling structure.

The Colosseum Could Give Birth to More Xenos

One theory is that the Colosseum is the dungeon’s own way to produce more Xenos. Since the Xenos are regular monsters that gained sentience after having their souls reincarnated hundreds of times, the Colosseum could be a way to speed up this process. This speculation is highly plausible considering how little the Deep Floors are unexplored, withmonsters within these areasrarely defeated by adventurers. As these lower floors monsters cannot be reincarnated at the same pace as the upper floor monsters, the Colosseum could be the dungeon’s way of reincarnating the souls of the Deep Floor monsters at higher rates.

The existence of the Xenos may be a mystery, but one thing that many agree on is the fact that the dungeon looks after these sentient beings. The Xenos even go as far as calling the dungeon their mother, as it has given them birth and looks after them. The safety points within the dungeon could also potentially be resting places made specifically for the Xenos to thrive in. Otherwise, it would hardly make sense for an entity giving birth to endless waves of monsters to simultaneously offer safety points throughout its floors.

The Colosseum Could Potentially Make Monsters Stronger

Another speculation that explains the Colosseum’s existence is that the structure could potentially be a training arena for monsters, as they become stronger by fighting one another. This paints the dungeonas a ruthless entity, instead of the image of a nurturing being that the previous theory propagates. However, considering what the series has presented so far, it’s quite likely that the dungeon would want to strengthen its monsters to bar adventurers from traversing further into its floors.

Since monsters grow stronger by consuming magic stones, the endless supply of these stones could result in the triumphant monsters becoming all the more powerful. However, it’s worth noting that this would be much difficult to achieve considering the scenario within the Colosseum, as even if one monster were to defeat a significant number, newly respawned monsters would overrun it, making it impossible for these monsters tosurvive for long within the arena.

Monsters Never-Ending Battle

For now, it’s highly plausible that the dungeon wishes to enhance the number of Xenos and allow them to thrive within its floors, turning the Colosseum into a catalyst for producing more sentient monsters. However, it’s too soon to jump to any conclusions as the dungeon’s truths are yet to unfold.
